How to Make a Pulp Game

Summarizes some of the thoughts inspired by the Shadowbane thread, which actually got split from my perspective with a similar thread in BeyondUnreal forums.

I keep checking out homelan and gonegold looking for light at the end of gaming's long tunnel of sequels, and seeing nothing but more elves and rocket launchers, at least for the next few years.

I promise to change that as soon as possible! :)

I've already tried to 'infect' the Realm Wars project with some new and exciting races but we'll see how that works out. As for rocket launchers, if I can ever start work on one of my FPS based (meaning not entirely a first person shooter) games, you will see just how different a game can be from the average slop! I'm also planning a fighting game which takes advantage of some new physical attributes, in interaction, fighter ability, even the fighters themselves, but again, we'll have to wait and see.

But hey, Mouxhim is at least picking up some appreciation and I'm starting to get writers interested so we may actually be getting this game closer to it's first milestone!

Anyways, here's hoping, even as bad as this may sound, that someone ruins my plans for being the first to use ne things in games ;-)

That's awesome. I like:

Nobody is buying new computers or hardware for gameplay. "Shader" is derived from the Greek phrase for "give NVidia three hundred dollars".

Anyway,

Unless I've missed something in all recent retail game announcements I've read, you have no cause for worry.

My brain just sort of switches off and goes onto autopilot when I see one of the following:

- a version number / year in the title
- a colon in the title
- a three-letter acronym used to describe the game

The typical retail game announcement these days reads something like:

Me2 Gamez just announced Clone III: The Land of Endless Sequels, their new MMORPG set in the Clone universe.

Which led me to name my self-indulgent blog (is the adjective redundant?) Yawnstrosity, after the new era of developing games whose subject matter comes nowhere near justifying their production values. Big & boring.

@Brad -

I myself use colons, yet for reasons to justify the storyline which will be implemented or otherwise the games most basic intent. My (obvious?) example is:

Horror Masters: Universal Championship

Horror Masters being the main title, Universal Championship representing the intended medium which in this case will be based on the races withing the universe of the game.

As for the three-letter acronyms, I only use them to give referance to the style of gameplay which it could be compared to, usualy noted as being the base of the game while in action. For instance, Nightmare Funpark, instead of being called a FPS or as I insist, an FPA (first person adventure), I could have gone into a much broader detail as such:

A first person race through extremely hazard filled areas of death and destruction, filled with devious enemies and special effects, among crowds of players in a fight to the finish where only the fittest survive!

FPA is a little bit easier don't you think, even if it deprives some description. :)

As for MMORPGs, I'm working on 2 and I hope they both achieve what I hope will be effective gameplay achievements! As for the MMOG part, I believe multiplayer experiences that involve the most interaction between players to be more pleasing and not to mention a bit healthier for all (though I guess I could be wrong). ;)

Good luck anyways, I'll be rooting for everyone and I hope they do the same for me, no matter how outlandish a project may seem!

You're working on two MMORPGs? Good gawd! I hope you don't have a day job too! ;)

Yes, I'm the new version Y2K3 Game Developer and I come complete with massive milti-tasking, much better than MS Windows and still compatible with current and future technology. I'm also less demanding of resources and user friendly! ;)
