Getting started Question

What engine would a person need to be able to do the following games RPG's, Shooters- FPerson, 3rdperson, Action Adventure, puzzle, board games. Is there one engine that can handle them all. Also what is the best for console building? Would I need the different engines for all the consoles and the iphone? Sorry about all the questions but I just want to make sure I get the right one...or ones.
Thanks

I'd start with TGEA or T3D. If you really, really want to port to consoles, then consider licencing the appropriate engine. Of course, I'm looking at it from a hobbyist's perspective - from your bio it seems you're more serious about this than I am ;).

Then you've got (and I'm by no means an expert) TGEA, T3D, Torque X (for X360, I guess) and Torque for Wii (I guess that's a 3D engine, I haven't had anything to do with it).I'd start with TGEA or T3D. I agree TGEA or T3D is the best start for 3D; the 360 engine is most likely not too far from TGEA.
However, iTGE (the iPhone 3D engine) is based off the older TGE, and it's also still in beta.

Torque for Wii is a mix of 2D and 3D capabilities, according to GG people I've contacted. Sort of a hybrid engine.I agree TGEA or T3D is the best start for 3D; the 360 engine is most likely not too far from TGEA.

It seems like starting with t3d would be the best bet and then getting the iPhone one later. Does the t3d have console capability?

Quote:Does the t3d have console capability? No. Computer only. The different consoles have different requirements so are all different engines. It shouldn't be too difficult to port to them tho from t3d.

Well that makes sense then, start with PC and port to the other engines later. Will all of the tool packs and art that says TGEA work with the T3D?

Simple answer is yes. If the art and tools use scripts, there will be some path changes to make, but that's the easy part.

Check out the entries under the 'engines' header to read about each engine. As far as I know, you will need to licence a few different engines if you want to deploy on multiple consoles/handhelds.
