Skinned, Character model with smoothing groups?

I created a character model in 3d studio max 4 and added smoothing groups to it. When i exported it as a static shape the smoothing groups worked fine in the engine. Then i added a skeleton and applied the skin modifier to it. Now when i export it the entire mesh is smoothed as if everything was in the same smoothing group. Any ideas?

I ran a quik test and seemed to work fine for me. Are you sure you didn't lose the groups and some point?. I just mad a simple shape that would show the groups off but it worked.

The problem comes when you have a character with a skeleton and you try to use smooth groups. It works fine for regular shapes. I checked with joe maruchek and he confirmed that it wasnt supported
