Testing out Artistic skills with Photoshop - and the settlement of an Indie-name

by Anders Norén · 02/07/2006 (9:23 am) · 5 comments

Recently, i started playing with Photoshop. What started out as a pure test (and a lot of headaches), have turned into an interest. Oh yeah, the hardcoder have gone into some graphics, how about that. I have tried out some of the tutorials available online, and i have been playing around a bit for myself, and i am really starting to like it. It is fun, and easier as you advance. Even if i haven't advanced that much yet...

I will try to get hold of a used copy of Photoshop 7 later sometimes, and hopefully i'll learn something useful, that can pick down some money in the art section of my next(first) game. Anyway, enough of the art.

In my last plan, i took some time to explain about what i was planning regarding starting up as an Indie. I was requesting some feedback about the name, and decided to get rid of it. And now, i have something new for you to give some feedback on. Drip-Drop Soft.

I was hoping that you could answer some questions as well...

What do you associate with the name?
Do you like the name?
If yes, why?
If no, why?
Do you have any logo ideas suiting the name?

Well, that's that for this time. See you!

It's a nice name, and but I dont think it's to easy to remember. the thing I associate the name to is a drop of rain water. I don't know about the logo

The hyphen in the name might be problematic. But personally I like it. It's short, has alliteration, and few letters. It'd be suitable for a company that makes lighter games, not big RTS's or military shooters.

I would probably go with Drip Drop Software or Drip Drop Games, though. Ending in "Soft" just feels incomplete with this name.

Thank you for your comment, J Lesko. I just discovered that www.drip-drop.com if free. I might change my mind, and use only the name "Drip-Drop" instead. Any thoughts?

I'm still of the mind that a hyphen can't help you, but can hurt you. You'd have tell people "go to drip dash drop dot com". But they're going to type in "drip drop dot com", which unfortunately someone has squatted.

On the other hand, Coca-Cola is very similar to your name and is hyphenated, though most people refer to it as "Coke". And they have like 100 years of name recognition.

I'm not a marketing expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt. You might want to check out the guidelines listed here:
http://www.igorinternational.com/process/company-product-names.php

Also, here's a pretty large list of game companies.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/directory.php?action=browse&cat=23

Note that there are only a couple of companies out of a hundred on the list with a hyphen in the name.

I would also lean toward having "Software" or "Games" in the official name, just because it's clearer and you can always refer to it casually without it if you want. "Toys for Bob" can get away with it because the name at least implies entertainment.

Anyway, hope that helps.
