So it begins!

So I just bought the Torque Engine because I've done all I can using Macrodobe's Director and the ShockWave 3D engine. Director is great but they really need to update that engine.

Anyway, I hope to be able to take advantage of this engine and awesome community to make some great games for a change!

Both the 3D and 2D engines are amazing. I used Director also but I just bought the 2D engine about a month ago and light years ahead of Director for games. The performance is amazing and the programming is an easy transtition from Director.

I spent years with director, both 2d and 3d. Very sad piece of software that was innovative a decade ago and now lags WAY behind. Major bugs are never addressed and useless features are added with each new release with an ugly price tag for upgrading. The 3d engine has had NO attention lavished on it since it's initial release and is very slow, prone to memory leaks and missing major features basic to dev'ing for 3d. The sad sack adaptation of javascript for a language to supplement lingo is quite a hack if you look into thier implementation. The director dev team at macromedia needs a serious kick in the ass.

That felt good to get off my chest. ahhh.

TAP is the way to go!

It's funny actually, one of the main reasons I switched to the torque engine was to get away from Director's poor support for transparancy/depth sorting issues. Well it seems TGE suffers from some of the same problems, at least in the vanilla version. you can't imagine how sad I was upon loading my super-huge hero tree and seeing it inside out and see through. I guess I should look into the TSE to see if it fixes any of this.

On a positive note, TGE's animation engine is amazing to work with. I use Lightwave 8.5 to do all the modeling and animation, and the exporter over at gnometech.com/lwdtsmain.shtml is great.

Here's a few screens of what I've been messing around with:

This keeps happening when I back the camera away from the player, it turns white... I'll have to look into it.
