Dream of mine...

by Anders Norén · 01/21/2006 (9:24 am) · 7 comments

Yeah, i've had this dream in my head ever since i started develop games. I have never told anyone about it, until now. I am going to spend some time to tell you all about it here. Sorry, no screenshots. If i get my ass around and start to work on it, maybe you'll see something in a year or two ;)

I have always loved driving. The thing i loved most in the games Mafia, Gta: SA and all of those, was to drive. Drive around in the city, drive out to the countryside, seeing a whole town, in a game. Without objectives, without any particular reason. Just drive. To bad thing is, most standard driving games don't take full advantage of this. Most driving games consist of:

Select a track
Race it three times
Win
Race a new track three times

...and so on. I can understand that a lot people enjoy that, but i don't.

My dream, is to create a racing game, that takes place on an island. A huge island. This island is made up by a city, the citys suburbs and the wilderness. There are three game modes.

Singleplayer racing.

Select a track from a list, race. See a preview and a minimap how the places looks like. The more races you win, the more money you make. Make more money, buy better cars. Sell your old cars to make more money, or save all of your cars in a garage for your viewing pleasure.

Multiplayer racing.

Select a track from the list, and race versus other people.

Freeride.

This is what i am positive about, simply because it is something i would really want to play. Select a car. The cars you have bought in the Singleplayer racing, are the cars you can choose from. Now, go wherever you want to go. Every racing area available in the Single/Multipalyer racing, are available to race in singleplayer. The city is full with people walking, minding their own business. The streets are full with cars of various models, riding around. You can go everywhere. Ride around in the central parts of town, ride around in the park, go to the beach (To frame off the driver from going into nowwhere, the game takes place on an island), drive into the wilderness. The wilderness would have animals in it, like bears, fishes in the water, butterflies, birds and whatnot. A complete, open ended racing game. I wouldl ove to make one, i would sure as hell love to play one.

Don't sit there and laugh at me now, this is my dream. Post your's ;) The dream in itself would be to actually make something like this, some day. Work on it part time, besides everything else. And of course, everything would be handled by TSE. Well, what is life without dreams?

Hey, this is cool. This remindes me on the first Caramgeddon game. If you gonna do something like this, count on me on the buyers list! I'd love to see something like this again. Put in a "Pedestrian" mode to smash as many pedestrians as possible... :-)

Like a challenge mode? Yeah, it is too boring in Midtown Madness when they jump away ;) ...and carmageddon, you say? For pc? Got to check that one out...

I like the idea! I think thats one reason that the Grand Theft Auto series has been such a hit. You can jusr roam around doing whatever you please.

My "dream", which I have been working on for a LONG time, was a combat game where you could do other things than just fight and go on missions.

I guess that following the races/missions/whatever of a game is fun, but I prefer to just chill sometimes and explore or do things that have nothing to do with the storyline or main playing-intent of the game.

This does sound really cool.
Will take a fairly large amount of time to really polish it & make it something you'll feel good about, quality wise.

Open ended games are always my favorites. It's fun sometimes to just run / ride / fly around, explore, commit random acts of piracy / heroism.... Love that kinda stuff.

@Nate: Ever tried Shenmue or Shenmue 2? It's a massive rpg (not in 'the gain some levels, kill the boss, repeat until you have 1551531535 hp' sense) based around martial arts. It's like a huge game, based around a fighting game engine, developped by Yu Suzuki of Virtua Fighter fame.

Thanks for all of the comments - they are encouraging :) I thought about freeride, and wondered what could keep the player interested enough to continue driving around.

First and foremost, smart places where the player can make jumps, to earn money. The longer/higher jump, the more money he'll get - money he can spend on new cars. I have also thought about Hidden packages. Cruise around, and search for pakcages, with 200 packages spread around the island. Except for bringing in money, does the packages result in add-on's and sometimes new cars, when the player has collected 10, 20, 30 packages and so on. I need to spend some more time thinking about it - i am sure that there are ton's of things that can keep freeride interesting.

In GTA, you can unlock weapons and vehicles at your "house" or other places, which you can go pick up at any time, by getting a certain number of packages. Seems to work well so I guess you could use something like that for your project.
