by Ian Roach · 12/30/2005 (1:37 pm) · 7 comments
Greetings everyone, i hope every has had a great christmas and a soon to be new year :)
Over on our forums ive started up a discussion for the various guns you will find in our upcoming release.
The discussion can be found here
www.illumina-game.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=745
Since we are porting over to 1.4 currently i thought the now would be the best time to get some opinions from other people on gun names / firing rates/distances/recoil e.t.c
If you have any suggestions feel free to signup on the forums and post your opinion.
Now here are some random pics (texture sizes have been reduce for performance ingame)

It seems that the site was down for a little bit, working now though.

Oh, no offense, but logging into a forum just to see 'the discussion' is kinda weak. (If I wanted to post, then I could see the point.)
Nice efforts otherwise,

I was under the impression that your game was in the near distant future. Most of the high-tech weapons I see on the covers of magazines in the grocery store seem to have all sorts of 'accessories' attached. Scopes/infared, laser, video for looking around corners, etc. Looking at the above pics after seeing some of your GUI pics and screenshots from previous plans, Im a little puzzled...they seem odd or dated. Maybe its just me.Oh, no offense, but logging into a forum just to see 'the discussion' is kinda weak. (If I wanted to post, then I could see the point.)

Im open to suggestions though, i doubt in 40 years guns will have moved that far along, plus in our game half of earth has been wiped out, which tends to halt technology :)

Im a bit confused by what you mean john ? most of our weapons are supposed to be based on current day, despite being set in the future, theres no lazers e.t.c and we want to keep the guns semi familiar.Im open to suggestions though, i doubt in 40 years guns will have moved that far along, plus in our game half of earth has been wiped out, which tends to halt technology :)

this tends to come up so often for me everywhere I go, i.e. coffe shop, corner store, gas station, play ground, post office, etc.
I view it as creative licensing. If the game takes place 40 years from now, whether or not half the world is wiped out, weaponary will have changed greatly. BTW: weaponary has drastically changed over the last 40 years, even the last 20 years. But, (here comes the creative licensing) since Ian is a artsist/designer for the game, it is his decision that will decide the amount of change,.......He just needs to sell the player on it.
I have spent many, many days arguing with myself over this very same issue. something futuristic, but still needs to resemble modern style for the player's/viewer's understanding. Imaging giving someone
who has never seen the Movie(circa 1985, I believe) the Desert People's little voice weapon. I would be like, " Can I have a bigger club?". ANyways, Like I said, I have spent so much time on this subject, I tend to babble to much also about it.
About your weapon's:
I likt the visual layout of the Pistol.(reminds me a bit of Robo-cop)
The other ones seem generic, like I have seen them somewhere, but not sure where????
The little cirlce targeting thingy on the end of the 3rd one down, looks out of place(I would take it off)
Ask yourself 1 major question(And this depends on what your player looks like. I have seen some of your GUI and it does look very Sci-Fi,..Nice job):
" Is my weaponary compatable with the visual design of my Player?"
Now your player needs to be compatable with your GUI design, and with a very nice GUI, those weapons seems out of place to me. I did like the FPS view of your the gun you showed in the " Bend or Flat gui"
Hey Ian, Not sure if you have any of these, but if you live near a 50-75% off Book store or a B&N, check
out the weapons of war book they sell. not sure on the exact name. you will know when you see them.
I have about 20 books on various weaponary,...Hand held, Vehicle, Air, heavy, light, stealth, combat, you name it, I have many versions of it, and some in multi colors(I like them best) :)
I would be glad to talk more, but I myself must get back to work.
Have a Happy New Year!!!
Have fun,

Wow, looks like the age old question of "Does technology advance if half the World is wiped out?",...this tends to come up so often for me everywhere I go, i.e. coffe shop, corner store, gas station, play ground, post office, etc.
