Life First
September of 2004, I crushed a disc in my lower back, I was laid up for 6 months with absolutely nothing to do. I had surgery in December of 04, but I didn't fix the issue and now am waiting on another. I work about 2 hours a day before the pain takes over and I have to drug up.
Game Dev
Since I have alot of free time on my hands, I wanted to write an RPG in the style of Lufia, my favorite RPG of all time. I have been a network technician and help desk person for many years. I have done some programming in the past, however it was mainly using basic on the Apple 3, yes I am that old. I have even written a game in high school that was published, 20 years ago. Then turned away from programming in favor of networking, which at the time had way more opportunities in the area I lived. Anyways, I found Torque and fell in love right away.
Now I have all flavors of Torque and some of the content packs as well. I have learned a tremendous amount since my injury. I don't want to be in the industry except as an indy. After a year of tinkering with Torque, I finally have a little to show.
My first plan was very brief, but told exactly what I wanted to make, a game that combined all of my favorite subjects. SciFi, Ancient Roman culture, and WW2. Kinda sounds like a wierd mix, but it is actually coming together. Our story line is just about complete and the first map is layed out and working, yes it programmer art, see screens below.
The tenative title is 5th Reich. The story takes place in the year 2237. Germany is once again fighting for world dominance, no offence to germans but I had to choose somebody. They have conquered most of the world. They are still trying to secure some of the outlying pockets of resistance.
Moving to TSE
I purchased TSE awhile ago, but it has been sitting, collecting dust. I got a couple of books on shader programming, and forced myself to learn. Now I think I have found the artist that lives in me. I have been playing with Blender, The Gimp, Texture Maker, and Cshop. I am also patiently waiting for Constructor. I have decided that TSE will make a far more graphically interesting project.
Since I am getting ready to port to TSE, none of the screenshots are of TSE yet, but they will come. These screenshots are from the "Gates of New Rome." This map represents the Praetoriun Guard outside the city of New Rome. and is where the story begins. The skybox is going to be changed as it was my first attempt at making skyboxes.

More to come in the next plan.
Later!

Hey man I am in a similar boat. I have 8 bad disks. I work at home so the pattern is 2-4 hours work then nap. Rinse repete :) Wish you the best on the disk. Don't push it if you had surgery either. Buy bunch of computer game programming books so when your resting you can read and take notes. I used digital IC recorder for notes and can be uploaded thru usb later.

8 disks, I am amazed at that. I am in agony with just 1. How can you cope?
