I just wanted to share something funny (well I think it is) with you all...

About 2 years ago, being new to the whole "game dev biz" I started planning a game with the working title of "Operation Watchet Freedom"
And being a noob, you think every game idea you have is amazing.

After about 3 hours of planning I sent out a press release with the following info:

Quote:
Simply Gaming announces first game in development.
Publisher: In House
Developer: In House
Format: PC
Release Date: TBA

Intro
Simply Gaming an online games review web site is proud to announce that is it starting work on its first game, titled Operation Watchet Freedom (Working title)

Brief Story
Terrorists have taken over the small town of Watchet and none of the villagers know why.
What they don't know is that the town's paper mill is a front for a secret government nuclear missile base which the terrorists have taken over.
The terrorists are threatening to launch 3 nukes at London, Washington and Russia if the government don't pay them 500 million within 48 hours.
So it's up to our hero to retake the town and secure the nukes.

Features

# First Person Shooter

# More than 20 weapons ranging from AK47's to home made bombs.

# Whole town recreated in 3D allowing player to explore the whole town.

# More than 30 missions above and below ground.

# Choice of 6 SAS soldiers to play as.

# Large training level to ready you for action.

Full details coming soon.
Story may change over time.

Lame idea isn't it?

Well... within a few hours of sending out the press release, I had about 6 publishers contact me ready to do deals. (no I'm not joking) JoWooD even bugged me for a while about the game.

I also had email after email from gaming websites wanting interviews, screen shots and more info.
(Most of them even rang me!)

Then about 2 weeks later I was looking in the PC Gamer UK magazine and came across:

Why am I telling you about this now?

Well, I was just doing random google searches and when I typed in "Operation Watchet Freedom" I came across LOADS of websites from around the world that had the game listed.

I even found a site that said they have a "No CD Crack" for it!

So it just goes to show... You don't need a next gen game to get the press talking about it.

It's interesting... just say FPS and the world puts it's eyes on you! This seems to be happening a lot around here actually...

What a strange thing indeed... This deserves some study.

That is crazy. That's exactly what I was describing in my last plan and what "happened" to us a couple of weeks ago, only I sent a press release to one web site.

Having SAS or some elite team go in with state-of-art weapons is easy as pie and ho-hum. But get the townspeople, with homemade sticks of dynamite, dear hunting rifles, crossbows, and pitchforks who go in and take the town back themselves and this would be entertaining to me.

I think when I was planning it, I kind of based it on an old movie where terrorists take over a small town and some school kids take it back.

Wish I knew the name of it...

Oh man, that's hilarious! Hmm... so much hype... This is worth some thinking. Imagine the hype you would create by sending something like this out to advertise your company... You would get... sued. Heh, good luck man.
