Plan for Jacob Fike (valinorbob)

by Jacob Fike · 12/05/2005 (10:45 pm) · 11 comments

Work has been going well on php|Overlord, and I've gotten some positive feedback from the alpha test. I have also gotten a spiffy logo made, and have begun work on some snazzy icons and a final skin for the application itself. Here's a snapshot that shows the basic direction I am going with the design. I am quite proud of my icons, being a coder rather than a designer I think they turned out rather well, but I'd love to hear what ya'll think.

On the coding front, I am almost through with refactoring the code to be as clean, fast, and secure as possible. I've got a few more features to add once that's done, then it'll be time to write a plugin api, clean up the templates, and BAM! version 1.0 will be out the door. I've set a schedule for myself, using the demo of the app running at www.phpoverlord.com/demo/ to keep myself motivated. Anyone can check out my progress there. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on the forum I have setup, and there's a poll as well on the main page.

I followed the link and logged in :)

I want this. It seems more comfortable to work with then iTeamwork.

When will it be done? Do you have a cost yet?

Thanks for the compliments.

I have set a tentative date of January (but not a specific day) for version 1. I've still got a lot of work to do, but compared to what is already done, it's not that bad. Since I only work (at my crappy day(night) job) about 20 hours a week during the Christmas break, I will have lots of free time to get some real work done soon.

There will be no cost for the final version. This is a semi-open source project. I will remain the only developer for the core app and phpoverlord.com will remain the sole point of distribution, but there will be a plugin API and anyone will be allowed to write and distribute plugins and use the app for any purpose. Donations, of course, will be glady accepted; and I plan to offer hosting options for those without their own domain or hosting space. This will probably be for a small one-time fee, rather than a monthly fee; but I haven't worked all that out yet.

Feel free to download the alpha version and try it out. I will include an upgrade option when I release version 1, so you won't have to worry about losing any data.

I like the "my domain" icon and the new logo :]
I checked out the demo.
It seems someone is hard at work with their wafflehouse plans.
Cool stuff Jacob

Yarrr!

Very neat project management system. I am likely going to be a one-man-team for the most part, but I could probably use some organization, especially if I do end up recruiting project members in the future.

Yea, I'm looking forward to this, use a different project management software right now that isn't to good for games so this will be nice.

@Jacob, that looks good man! This should help people VERY MUCH! I know it'll help me. I'm gonna install it in a little while.

I think we may be switching to this when it's done, rather than the less-robust task manager we're using now.

Thanks for all the comments. Don't be shy about posting suggestions or feedback at the official forums. The more input I get, the better this will turn out.
