Plan for Chip Lambert

Well it's been a long time since my last and first .plan. I guess I should try to make a habit of doing these more often.

Couple things since my last one. I've gotten married, bought a house, started a new job as a Database Analyst/Programmer for a private college in Virginia and rekindered my game development desire.

For a while I didn't do anything programming wise. Me and my friends decided to take another approach and toss out the space FPS I mentioned in my first plan and do an RPG based on the Dungeons and Dragons campaign one of my friends has been running for years now. We have a plethora of information to go from including history, cities, npcs, monsters, items, gods, etc (all encompassing 7 3 in 3 ring binders). All original. There is nothing from actual D&D in the campaign so we could put any of it into the game without battling the beast that is Wizards of the Coast.

It's going to be nice. We're putting together a massive website for the world to introduce people to it. On there we plan on having short stories, D&D class kits he has made up, a D&D source book compiled from the world and comic books (gotta love Comic Book Creator :)). We hope all this could maybe attract a fan base. We've got the game planned out, its just now drilling down to what we want to put into this first installment (we see potential for several sequels and addon modules, etc). But I've began working on the core framework of the game, using TGE, RTS-SK, and the lighting pack. I know Age of Decadance (the recent Image of the Day) is using this setup and I apologize to them for using it as well. I hope Flashback doesn't look at us as a copy cat. ;)

I know some people might be thinking, "Why not mod Neverwinter Nights?" We had thought about this but then we alienate people who do not have NWN and we would like to reach as broad of audience as we can.

We know this idea may not make much or get anywhere, but that's not going to stop us. We're devoted to forging our names on in the Indie community and if it takes 5, 10, 100 games to do so, we will not stop. We're running on pure passion here.

Our only drawback right now is Artists. Mainly Modellers. Jeremy (the creator of this universe) has several nice drawings of PCs, NPCs, monsters, concept art,etc but we cannot seem to get lucky with an 3D artist. So for right now we've gotten Timothy Aste's content pack collection and the medieval weapons pack to start with until we find that artist. Also we would like to have another level designer. The guy we have is really good with UnrealED and I'm trying to show him Quark. He's coming along nicely but could use some help.

So maybe if some up and coming 3d artist is interested in helping, (skill level at this point dosen't matter to much, he can evolve with the company) then please reply here :)

Good day all. Happy coding!

I might suggest as a help to your UnrealED guy, that you use something other than Quark. Quark is an excellent program, but it has some texturing problems and a few other minor hitches and some work-losing crashes that can really throw a nasty monkey wrench in your mapping. I recommend Cartography Shop 4 + Torque Pipeline as I've used it with some success in the recent past and have had no problems with it, no crashes, and it works as expected every time so far. As to your game idea, it sounds great. I can't wait to see what your team produces from this effort.

Chip,

I have a feeling that a solution to your modeling problem may present itself in the near future.

Cartography Shop is an excellent program, I don't use it for my project because I am not using DIFs but if I did use DIFs, I would definately be using CS.

I'll have to check out Cartography Shop. Keep hearing good things about it. I don't care much for Quark personally but it was that or the Valve Hammer, but there's that whole legal debate over Hammer so I was avoiding it.

Thanks for the tips and inspirational words guys!
