Plan for Chris Labombard

by Chris Labombard · 10/22/2005 (6:03 pm) · 30 comments

I just finished building a prototype, but I dont know if the game is fun or not...

Follow the music with your mouse.
Collect points to add another beat
If you dont collect enough points you lose
If you do then the music gets funkier

Collect more points for:
1. Being close to the center
2. Being on the beat when the sound plays

Please download it and check it out. Let me know what you think.

Only the first 2 tracks are playable.

Its all programmer art, obviously. The green bubbles are supposed to be wave ripples.

Well, it's kind of a new take on DDR. I think there's a lot of room for music based gameplay, but this needs plenty of improvement. Although it's a decent concept for a web browser based game. (I don't know what the status of T2D in a browser is, but you could certainly do this in Flash).

It would be nice if you had some warning of where the bubbles would appear. A game like this also needs to tie some kind of cool viduals into the music. See all the other music-based games out there for what I mean.

I really like music-based gameplay, it will be interesting to see where you go with this...

Sounds like Namco's Technic Beat..

the premise is to move to spots on the field and press a button when the appearing circles inner waves hit the outer edges of the rings.. which is all to be in time with the music.

Personally, I think it's quite good. The second track is, in my opinion, much better than the first track. It's got more beat, faster and just overall it's better. Plus, it's easier to score points, faster, and in a shorter time.

It would be better to have, perhaps, more than one beat at a time, therefore making the music beats sound more musical. Instead of one beat at a time, which sounds quite dull, or boring.

Jeff - The difficulties arent really set up yet. Just approximated for the first track. Easy has to be easy. If they lose the tut on easy then it decreases there chance of purchasing.

Andy - The beats will be wave ripples. It will look a ton better.

You dont need warning for easy mode, because there is such a large delay before it adds to the music... In insane mode you have to memorize everything and execute it perfectly.

I dont know if this will go anywhere... that is the point in posting it. I need to know if its fun or not

Nice, for me I'm not much into mouse-speed-clicks games. But for a moment I just got a quick idea that might be far from what you intend to do, but you may like to look at this http://www.gamersinfo.net/gallery/index.php?action=showgal&cat=89&PHPSESSID=70c7ec2abc210f18c3c3652bdcedecef

ramen - Did you try the game? They dont look anything similair, other then they both use music waves

Tom - I agree entirely

Hum that namco ... it's like my idea for TSE shader water with T2d game on top... well not like it a lot but a little.

Yeah, i tried it out. The game doesn't play exactly the same as the above mentioned game. Just the premise of being at the circle when the note is to be played is probably just something all rythym based games share.

I appreciate everyones comments... but what Im really looking for is wether or not I should continue developing it.

In other words...

Is it fun ?

So far, if you make improvements and generally act on good suggestions, then my opinion would be that you should keep developing it. Also, if you think it's fun or you want to develop it, then that's even more reason why you should.
As to if it is fun or not; well, at the moment my thoughts are that it is fun for a prototype, but it could be improved and worked on alot.
The music helps improve the gameplay; without the music, or the beat, the prototype would not be where it is now. Nor as good, in my opinion.
My suggestion would be, at the moment, to let the player see how many points he or she just gained, as in a colour scheme or effects around the wave or beat.

Wow, already working on another one, eh?

I played it and it was pretty fun, given that I played it a quite few times in a row, even though that's not my type of game. Honestly, I don't know how many people like that type of game genre, but I can definately see that this game can get addictive once a person gets really into it.

Very nice work on the 2D style GUI menu, it looks crisp. :)

Jeffrey - Its just programmer art ;)

Of course Im working on another one... Whilst marketing the last one of course.

Remember this is just a prototype. Once the music is improved, tuned and the visuals are in it should be much more addictive.

I liked it; very easy to pick up and play. And I'm a fan of these kinds of games too; this one sets itself apart by focusing on the mouse and precise target-hitting rather than timing.

It could be an excellent music game if it were made slightly more complicated(through button presses or an additional cursor or something), and had a better way of letting the player read upcoming notes. The additional complication is needed because it adds a bigger learning curve. If it's too short people master the game very quickly and move on....and in this game the only thing adding complexity right now is where and how fast your mouse moves...though perhaps that could be taken advantage of too with "bad" notes. And while I was able to get almost 2000 points on the second track after a few tries, that's because the song was easy to memorize. I'd rather have a game that told me what's next and had much faster patterns than one that is slow but requires memorization.

James - Good points.

What do you mean by bad notes ? A simultaneous note that's worse ?

Ive had 3400 on track 2 :P I cant break 2000 on Track 1 though. Came close at 1997... which means noone has beaten track 1 on insane.

Very cool/ I agree that it needs some kind of hint as to what is going to come. Maybe show the upcoming riff, so the user might know what is coming. Maybe do a little ripple like you mentioned hinting where to click before the note plays.

I love DDR (we have a $500 pad at our house, but we went through about four different types before we go this one). There are many related games, but this is still a market that needs more exploration.

Keep working on this one. Let me know how you are progressing. You know my email address. We are interested.

I'd say it's a fun prototype. I'd agree with the people who said it needs to be a bit more complicated either through beats or something else as to increase the difficulty/mastery learning curve. Also, the idea of having some kind of faint ripple for where the next note will be is great.

The beats themselves are supposed to be ripples. Should I also use a ripple for the hints ? Or should there be something else ?
