Plan for Eric Petersen

by Eric Petersen · 09/29/2005 (7:24 pm) · 12 comments

I have been contracted to do sound effects for a TGE FPS so it needs a lot of weapon sounds. In my experience, the best sound FX are the actual sound effects of the object in question. Since I have an extremely good portable audio recorder, this is not a problem for me.

Here are video and sound samples:

Sound of the AK-47 fired AK-47 3 shot burst

Video of the AK-47 being fired AK-47 being fired on full auto 296k.

A sample of the UMP-45 UMP-45 5 shot burst

It is a pleasure to do these recordings. I even have an opinion about Submachine guns now that I've fired some. My personal favorite? The Colt 9mm or the AK-47. The Ak-47 has more firepower but is harder to handle. The Colt may not blow through walls but I can aim the blasted thing. The work continues.

And thats all for now folks!

this is really funny. I don't think anyone is wondering where you got the portable audio recorder, I think the question is where did you get the leet guns!

Cool stuff. The indoor range is not going to give you the best sounds for outdoor combat.
Hum that reminds me I should make some sounds of some of the various pistols I carry (I have Texas CHL
and pack 24x7). If your ever near San Antonio I have a great outdoor range (Cedar Ridge Range) that everyone
goes to practice.

@Joshua Dallman:

Actually, I was wondering about the audio recorder, heheh.

Eric, what type of recorder do you have, and do you recommend it to others? What features does yours lack that you would have liked to see? I've been putting off buying a DAT recorder for a long time.

@Randy - Sorry but you're wrong about the outdoor sounds being better. They are just different. If you were to do a game where everything is indoors such as DOOM 3 or where there are metal walls surrounding the game mission areas wouldn't the indoor sounds better match the environment? That being said, I do also have the outdoor sounds captured.

@Joshua - Fully automatic weapons and silencers are legal to own. You can get the M-60 for the low, low price of $8499.99 for hunting new super animals like the Flying Squirrel or the Electric Eel.

ATF Class 3 weapons require special permit. Several ranges rent them out for target shooting. That's anything with burst or full auto.
Now that the AWB has expired you can buy the semi auto's marked "Law Enforcment / Military Use Only". Like police issue M4's etc.
Eric are you going to sell more shooting sounds or are these just for 1 contract project?

I work full-time for Cartel Games but I'm allowed to do contract work on the side. I am available to do Sound FX contracts if that is what you are asking. For more information: www.mythicblades.com or www.cartelgames.com or just email me directly through my profile here at GG.

Recording in a neutral (echo/reverb/ambience free) environment then applying real time post effects (doppler, pitch, echo, reverb) would give you the widest range of sounds for the buck. Sound forge has some great tools for extracting an environment out of a sound sample or adding it back in (wave hammer), but applying a post effect in game to a clean sound would prevent most post work and significantly reduce your asset overhead.

Are you planning on recording for each different environment you may encounter in-game?

@ Jameson - When you rent a firearm, you are obligated to shoot them at the firing range. Its not likely that they will let you take the fully automatic M-16 down to the local bank for 10 minutes work etc,. . .Did I say bank, I meant ideal recording location.
