New Webserver Hardware

by Rick Overman · 09/06/2005 (4:29 pm) · 8 comments

Upgraded our webserver today, hope no one noticed more than a brief interruption in service. Couple minor gliches but otherwise a very smooth switch over.

We are now running on a Dell PowerEdge 1850 Dual 3.0GHz/2MB Cache, Xeon Processors w/ 2Gigs of RAM. We were previously running on Dual 1.0Ghz P4 Processors w/ 1Gig of RAM, so a considerable horse power upgrade.

Also using a new php accelerator (eAccelerator), so far looks good.

Happy Surfing!

Could there an SSL problem? The secure checkout link don't seem to work, but standard one does.

Hmm...Xeon.. Never heard of it. Is it that much faster than P4 that I should switch?

The Xeon chip is made for servers, not desktop computers. Unless you have a server that a thousand people use at the same time, you don't need to switch.

Just as a matter of interest, and not invoking a CPU war... Why did you guys choose Intel cpu's and not AMD?

Sounds like a nice little system anyways!

I have 2 AMD machines here at work AMD64-4000 and and AMD-3000, both running Gentoo Linux ;)

The type of CPU did not really factor in my choice of server. I wanted, solid, reliable hardware with good support. Dell makes some great affordable hardware and we have always had good luck with their support.

All else equal I would have choosen AMD, because AMD has been so kind to GarageGames and is even providing ALL the machines at http://www.indiegamescon.com Indie Games Con this year!
