Plan for Jacob Vann

Spy Jupiter is going to be a Metroid-inspired (I use this term in the most convenient of definitions) platform adventure sci-fi game. It takes roughly 1,400 years in the future, after Earth has been all but destroyed. The title character, Spy Jupiter, is the son of a prominent Intelligence Agent. Through his father, he learns of something sinister being hidden in a long-abandoned research-station built into the surface of Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter.

The game will feature 6 different and expansive environments, and many types of weapons. And a game in this genre would not be complete without lots of hidden elements.

I've been working with T2D for 2-weeks. Unfortunately, with my full time job and new marriage, I don't have 40 hours a week to work. But I have gotten the basic, barest of the bare elements of the game (tile layers, scrolling -- the player can run, jump, and collides with tiles, all mostly without incident).

Here are some screenshots, just to give you an idea for the direction that the artwork will take (so far Spy Jupiter is a one man show and I'm doing the art and code):

A rocky, ruined palace environment:

A section of a temple

A weird section with purple, bubble-type tiles

My goals for the immediate future for Spy Jupiter are:
1. Draw/incorporate frames for Jumping, Somersault, Shooting, and Crouching
2. Fix the Parallax Scrolling (I think I just need to fix it so that the camera doesn't move beyond the bounds of the map)
3. Add Ability to fire the gun in many different directions
4. Write code to handle moving from one map to the next (knowing that it might break in the next version of T2D)
5. Implement code to handle an array of enemies, and place them in the map while it loads.
6. Create/implement the first enemy sprite, with collisions
7. Work on a simple HUD displaying Health, Ammo, etc.
8. Work on more tiles!

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on the game. I realize there is not much to say, yet. It's just pretty pictures. However, when I have a demo of Spy running, jumping, shooting, and moving between corridors all with enemy sprites moving around -- then I'll post a demo.

I may love art (though my homemade tiles and sprites might not show it! ;) ), but I would never have gotten into games were it not for the awesome and deep games of my childhood, all the way from Yars' Revenge to Castlevania, Symphony of the Night.

I look forward to getting dirty in T2D, and I guess I'll see everyone on the forums!

Hey Jacob, did you ever get the collision stuff figured out? I'd be interested in seeing what you ended up doing.

Nice going so far. I'm definitely going to keep my eye on this. If I had the time, I'd be developing a similar game. I loved Super Metroid and Castlevania SOTN as well, and I miss this game genre. This is exacly what I was hoping people would do when T2D came out... looks like you're the first to really tackle it!

Really sweet style. The "boy" is looking kind like some kind of captain. Any near the truth? Good luck with this. It is looking good so far, so keep it up.

Great work Jacob! This is all the more impressive for only 2 weeks work and I'm looking forward to see what 6 months work would look like!
