Plan for Chris "Radagar" Vogel

by Chris "Hyena" Vogel · 08/29/2005 (4:40 pm) · 2 comments

My goal with T2D is to make an 'old-school' top-down 2d RPG in the same feel as the early SNES Final Fantasy games or the SNES RPG Free-style movement games like Chrono-Trigger or Secret of Mana (can you tell I'm a Squaresoft fan?)

I have quite a story planned for this RPG, but I'm not going to get into that here. What I'm going to do is try to try plan out a list of goals to build up to, starting with very basic functionality and ending with a completed game. I'm hoping that by setting a series of small goals like that, I'll be able to stick with this project better and keep it going.

The Twelve Steps to an RPG
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Basic Scrolling Tilemap - DONE
2) Working Collision Detection between Player and Map Tiles - DONE
3) Scrolling Map Layers and Parallax layers (Clouds, etc) - DONE
4) Moving and Triggered Teleporting Between Different Maps or Map Areas - DONE
5) Adding Other Objects to the Map, such as chests, etc.
6) Text Boxes for Messages and NPC Dialog
7) Defined Player, NPC and Enemy Structures, Player variables and Inventory setup
8) Graphic Menus and Inventory Displays
9) Usable Map Items, such as chests, that modify inventory or stats
10) Basic Combat Engine
11) Random Combat Encounters
12) Scripted Quest Variables and Switches

With these 12 items completed, I'll be well on my way to having a working RPG. After this, I'll need more maps and dialog to power the story, as well as lots of art resources.

Working title for my RPG: WyrmSlayer

More to come soon...

my question for you is have you ever wrote a game before?

I ask because I have not, and I am currious about how long it took you to do the first 4 items in t2d.

I got the basic tilemap working with some borrowed graphics real quick. I'd say I spent a day or two getting used to T2D and working through the early tutorials, then probably just 1 more day getting step 1 done. After that, it didn't take me long to read up on how to do collisions and get step two done. Probably did that in an hour or two. Step 3 was much easier than I expected. I just looked at the spaceshooter tutorial and did something different. The hard part for me was drawing the transparent image of the clouds. I'm not an artist... Step 4 proved a little tricky, and took me a day or two to get working right.

Overall, I'd say I got the first 4 steps done in around 6 days of work. I probably put in an hour or two a day, except the first day where I hit it hard and did 4 or 5 hours. Finally, the 6 days was spread out over about a month, since I'm lazy and don't work on this stuff enough =) Someone very familiar with T2D could have those 4 steps done in an hour or two.
