Plan for Davey Jackson

Close encounters of the Nerd kind.
So here it is: my first BlogPlan thinger. It is my understanding that once I post here I can change the outcome of elections, the stock market, my income taxes, and how many more hits Paris Hilton gets on her site. UNLIMITED BLOG POWER Mu Ha HA Ha! So, while I have never bloged before the last 5 lines (err 4, I can't count) were quite enjoyable. I have to say I am pretty stoked to be part of a company where self expression is encouraged and supported. A genuine break from the TPS reports I was doling at my last job.
So... (I love using that intro, "So" It is kinda non- committal like I'm just positing my next thought) who is this guy and why is he starting a blog at GG. My name is Davey, and I was broght on to expand GG's presence in the educational sector. Basically we think that if schools start teaching students in Torque, not only will students have a better understanding of game design, but also GG might be able to conquer the game engine world. PLUG ( of course we couldn't do it with out the support of our loyal, beer drinking fans) I am told that "they" (the people here before me) had been talking about brining on a sales guy for a while but were looking for the right fit. Well, I've made it a month here and I think I'm converted. I could never again work for any company without in-house Nerf battles.
This place is NUTz. My first week on the job, they sent me to the Casual Games Conference in Seattle. Having only participated in the games industry from the consumer standpoint I was a little overwhelmed at first by the numerous acronyms: GG, PSP, IP, NDA, TGE, EULA, NC, ND, ESRB, ID, OMFG ect. However, I was surprised when nobody understood me when I said I was the FNG. ( That IP belongs to our friends in the AFL-CIO to describe rookies in a way the ACLU disapproves of-- especially if the rookie is also a member of the NAACP) At the end of day one in casual games jargon land, I enjoyed one the best perks to date: Microsoft bought me a beer. (actually more like 6. After 20+ years of service I felt entitled).
Hey, I'm getting into this, it's kinda fun.
Background rant? My last job sucked. That's pretty much it. GG is definitely raising the bar as far as employee satisfaction goes. This is the first job I ever interviewed for where my years of game time counted as work experience. What's even scarier is that I am WAY behind the 8-ball in terms of putting in my game time. You know call me crazy, but I found out early on that it is pretty hard to impress girls with your Super Pit Fall skillz. ("Chics like guys with Skilz you know nunchuck skilz....) So I closet gamed and gamed between relationships (or videos. Whatever!... God!) I remember my girl in college busting me playing Soul Edge while talking to her on the phone. "I can tell you're playing your game and not listening to me" Me: "Uh.. no, I'm not. CRAP! "(Lost to Voldo again). Plus I have that addictive game relationship that makes all other social courtesies (like bathing) secondary to getting to the next level. (Hmm, shower or feed my Chocobo?... hmmm the shower is going to be there.) I'm on the low end of the pole here though. Although I used to take sadistic pleasure in hitting people once then timing them out in Tekken 3. I've been eating the (Err... insert expletive here) at Tekken 5. (I hate it when they change my moves!) It's just not fair! Here I've been trying to suppress my inner gamer and now I'm up against guys who actually went the extra mile and killed Emerald Weapon! I confess! I always had to use the Justin Bailey code to see Samus' bikini. And (for shame) I had to use the whistles to beat Mario 3 (I just didn't have the patience!)
So.. why am I bloging now? Well 3 things actually: 1. I'm kinda enjoying it. 2. I didn't clean the bathroom as promised so I'm waiting for my girl to nod off before going back to bed. 3. Jay said that if I blogged well I might get some help on the sales side of things
PLUGI'm looking for schools and teachers who would be interested in Torque. We have several new resources making Torque easier and fun to teach. If you have connections to a school's game design, computer science, 3D Art program ect. please e-mail their contact info. It is way easier to sell a referral than to go in cold. We feel that teaching Torque at Colleges, Universities and Trade Schools is a no-brainer. We would even like to get T2D into the K-12 segment. (How fun would it be to build Galaga when you were 10?)
So, that's it my first BlogPlan. No corn dog, no cursing. Just a "Hey how are you? I'm a gamer too please help me sell Torque" kinda entry.
FYI: I can't spell, and I'm a slow typist. So if I am slow responding to you comments or e-mail just know it is probably because I am still spell checking it before I post.
Hasta la taco

But on the upside, if a university or school gets torque, you know its going to be a fairly big order :)
Hope you get on well with it all, I'm sure you'll have a fun time!
Now then, where is that serious games summit thingy... erk.

Yeah, I think the educational market has a load of potential too. Its pretty fragmented though, with lots of diverse groups with thier own special interests..But on the upside, if a university or school gets torque, you know its going to be a fairly big order :)

Definately call up some community colleges. Alot of them are trying to get alot of students for computer related classes (at least the ones I've seen). Convince the school that the class would be an easy sell and show them that Torque is the best choice for building the course around. You could always impress them with your nunchuck skillz, bow hunting skillz, computer hacking skillz...
Good luck Davey

As far as the education stuff goes, thats awesome! Torque really would do great in colleges, at my school I've slowly converted a lot of things from Unreal to Torque and many of the teachers are really pushing/supporting it since Torque is much more feasible to students in a lot of ways vs. anything else out there.

@Davey: great blog, you sound just about as crazy as all of the GG people and the people in the community lol, perfect fit... Know what you mean about Tekken 3 too, I used to kick major arse in that. Remember going to the arcade and beating the game on one quarter. Then tried the newer versions and got my arse handed to me lol.As far as the education stuff goes, thats awesome! I'm definitely with you on the education side ... that's super important. Every semester or so I get a group of kids who come by and I show them the ropes of game development. This year I let them in on Torque and in the future I'll be pushing for it even more!

"Lost to Voldo? Noob."
You obviously haven't had the proper Voldo treatment.

Torque Owner Stefan Lundmark
When I was looking for a education, I tried to find one where they teached out Torque.
Apparantly, it was only one out of five total, here in Sweden.
Hopefully more educations will follow that path, it would rock.
