Plan for Phil Carlisle

by Phil Carlisle · 05/13/2005 (7:44 am) · 10 comments

Not wanting to spam my plan or anything, but I'm trying to think this through and maybe someone else knows more than me about this.

Where does one go about collecting foley sound effects for vintage airplanes? For instance, real sound effects for a spitfire or me109??

I've seen people doing add-on's for WW2 games and other flight sims, so I'm sure its possible, but where would you get the sound for a cannon firing on a me109 for instance?

I wonder if there any stock CD's? or is it all custom recording?

Greetings!

I've always used Sound Ideas www.sound-ideas.com for my sound effects needs. They have a huge collection, and based on what I've purchased myself (a number of vintage movie studio sfx collections), they could very well have what you're after.

I'd recommend browsing their catalog, or write them directly. They seem very friendly in helping you track down that special sfx. Plus, they're Canadian, so how can you go wrong! :o)

Just as a side note, you could also sample it from vintage movies. Stuff that old though is probably not going to sound so great.

Sometimes FlightSim.Com has sound effects for particular planes...

If you want to stay legal (of course you know this, but others might not) don't just record from movies or any other source. I would start at some of those giant downloadable sound effects sources, like sounddogs, and see if they have exactly what you want. If they don't, but have something close, you or a state-licensed sound designer can tweak it until you get it sounding exactly right (use those old movies, etc, as inspiration, not source).

Actually, it looks like sounddogs actually has some spitfire sfx, but I don't have speakers on this computer so I don't know if they're any good. But you'll probably be in good shape.

Try the BBC sound libs, otherwise I'll chat yo Martin, whom you met, who studies Aeroplanes and I'll see if he knows anything around the area.

Hum at simviation.com there is a spitfire or 2 with /sound folder :)
You might try contacting the folks (normally a readme in each aircraft download zip) for permission to use or helpful info on obtaining
the stuff. Looks like they may of snagged some sounds from the MS Combat Flight Sim 2.

Also they have some sort of rolls royce merlin sound pack here www.simviation.com/fsdsounds.htm

Quote:Rolls Royce Merlin sounds. This fabulous engine powered both the Spitfire & the Mustang in WW2. Spit99sndpk. FOR fs98 & CFS. sound Pack for spitfire/p51.Completely new internal and external wavs. Actual internal sounds taken from a spitfire on the ground and in flight. Powerful Merlin engine sounds.Spimk2mp.zip recommended. Author.Mike Hambly M Hambly. File size 1472876

EDIT: Also you should have a copy of the DVD "The battle of Britan" 1969. :) Every sound you'll ever need is there.
Use FRAPS to capture some avi then pump that into a wave converter. :)

As Matt points out, thats also completely illegal!

There are enough sounds out there on the various websites to make me believe that they can be bought

One thought occurs to me about the movie suggestion, especially having just watched Battle of Britain recently.

The movies should make a great point of comparison for the sound effects you do find to use. My thinking is that the movie's audio is going to be a bit romanticized from reality anyway to make it more appealing, and hey, isn't that basically what we try to do in games, too? =)

Just a thought! Oh, and I can't wait for the game so good luck on your sound hunt!

Yea I was more kidding on the 2nd one. I think the simviation Merlin sound pack is public domain.

EDIT: Ok I downloaded the Merlin soundpack and he does want permission to use in a commercial project.
The date is 99' on the readme so I guess you could always try to ask for permission. He might just
need a simple credit. Simviation is mostly shareware site with ad's for commercial sim products.
