What is Torque Boot Camp?

Many people have asked about the possibility of a seminar to become more familiar with the Torque Application Platform, and GarageGames is answering the call--Torque Boot Camp is the first of a series of seminars that GG will present that are being built to provide face to face instruction for Torque Developers.

What will Torque Boot Camp cover?

As the first in a series of increasingly detailed seminars, TBC will be a survey level course covering 3 days of non-stop Torque education. It is being designed to expose developers to many of the most important areas of the Torque Game Engine (TGE), and allow them to become familiar with many of the processes and techniques of developing a project using the strengths of TGE.

Who should attend?

TBC is primarily targetted at licensed TGE owners who are looking for focused instruction on TGE internals, as well as overviews of developing games with Torque. As a survey course, TBC won't be delving down into the extremely low-level details of the engine, but it will provide a comprehensive view of the engine as a whole, focusing on important aspects of the larger systems.

What about everyone else?

TBC is just the first of many levels and types of instructional seminars that GG has planned (and the only one I'm allowed to talk about right now!). We realize that there are many Torque users, and many areas of Torque that we don't have time to cover in a 3 day survey seminar, and have plans to provide many other courses as things progress.

When can I attend!

The first public TBC is currently planned for the week immediately following IGC (10-12 October), in Eugene, Oregon. Details about signing up, cost, and further information about what will be covered will be released as things progress over the next few months.

How can I help?

We realize that TBC needs to meet the needs of the community to be as succesful as possible, so we would like everyone interested to answer the following very short questionaire. Feel free to discuss things here in the forum, but to make sure your thoughts are taken into consideration as we develop this course and others, please make sure to copy/paste the following questions into an email, and send to stephenz at garagesgames dot com.

1) What is your primary role in your project? Examples include: coder, scripter, level designer, artist, "one man army".

2) What is the most confusing aspect of Torque for you personally?

3) What area of game development using TGE would you like to see covered in a seminar?

4) How long of a course (how many days) would you be interested in attending? Consider having to take time off work (if appropriate), travel time and costs, and other concerns.

Where can I get more information about TBC?

As the course is developed, we will be providing additional information here in the community within .plans, news releases, and also responding to those that email the address above directly. Please keep in mind that we would much rather develop the course to it's fullest potential than simply talk about the course, so further information about TBC will only be released once it is finalized. We will certainly do our best to provide more detailed information about the course as soon as possible so that those interested in attending after GDC will be able to make plans early enough to attend.

@Firas: We are discussing a lot of different presentation scenarios, but right now things are really just beginning, so we can't make any calls as to how things will be--just know that we are well aware of the concerns about people that cannot travel to a seminar, and we are looking into ways we can solve this problem.

I would really like to attend. However, living on the East coast of Canda is probably going to rule that out, as after IGC I have the 35 hour drive to make back home... That's if I even manage to get to IGC.

If I end up going I am going to drive... No point in going on a trip if you dont drive (its half the fun) ... and I am a little bit afraid of flying.

I really want to go, but it just doesnt look feasible...

I believe GG should hold a 2 day session during the game developers confrence next year on the monday and tuesday "tutorial days". I know it is a perfect time for a whole flock of indie devs. to come.

@ Peter - We're looking at ways to host events with or around other events and conferences, we'll want to do more surveys, but all those people who've been asking for IGC's near them this might be a way to bring the show to you in 2006, so let us know regional areas that you'd like to see us consider (no promises). If we do end up coming to your area we'll need locals to point us to the right pubs and help be liaisons.

Right on brother. I'm not afraid to admit that I'm freakin flat out terrified of flying. Just the thought of getting onto a plane is enough to get my heart racing. I'm about 28 hours from GG myself and driving is the only way I'm getting there.

@ Jay,

St. Louis or Chicago would be great locations (for me). Looking at the map on the community page, something in the midwest should be well recieved.

Please add me to any list regarding a "BOOTCAMP" Any updates on the plan or schedule I would like to be notified. I live in Medford Oregon, and would love to go to Eugene for this... I would just need a few weeks notice so I could clear a few days on my schedule. VERY EXCITING!
