Plan for L Foster

One thing that I am always amazed about when I look around indie communities such as this one is how there is always a large and vocal group who complains that there are no opportunities available for indies to get anywhere or to get started. It is indeed true that as the new guys trying to climb up the Everest that is the games development industry things are difficult when you are just getting started. I know it, I have experianced it first hand like the rest of you. Yet I can also speak from personal experiance about the other side of this equation as someone who is personally involved in an opportunity that indies can benefit from, and I want to remind you to take advantage these great opportunities!
As some of you may already know I am employed during the day to develop games, not for the traditional games market that we all know and love, but for the other "gaming" market (ie. gambling). I don't develop games for casinos or even online casinos, instead I help to develop art and design games for electronic Bingo, which is played in the halls that we have all seen around our communities. As some of you may already know, Bingo is a multi-billion dollar industry, but what you don't know is that it is on the verge of moving ahead into a new era as it moves away from paper and ink dabbers to electronic gaming. Now we aren't talking about FPS games here, but puzzle and social games like what you see on sites like RealArcade, Zone and others. This market needs games, it wants games and this is where your opportunity comes in.
The company that I work for is looking to give indies a chance to get into this market. We took a lot of time to setup a fair and open competition called Opengine SDK where by making a game with our SDK for this market, you can win some money, gain some networking and prestige and have the opportunity to get royalties too. This isn't some scam or catch or any other nasty ruse, it's an honest opportunity that we are giving indies because we want to open the market to others, we cannot do everything ourselves.
Can you win money for being the winner of the competition or one of the 3 runners-up? YES
Can you get your game published through us onto our systems (over 3000 in total in over 90 halls) and in turn collect royalties? YES
Is this a great opportunity to better yourself, your company and become a better game developer? YES
Have members from this community taken the time to get involved in a competition such as this and in turn give themselves the opportunity to not only live their dreams but to also earn a living and get a solid foundation under them to make more games? NO
So if you want to take a chance to better yourselves and potentially get a solid start in making games that you can live off of, I recommend that you guys take a serious look at Opengine SDK. You likely won't get another one for a very long time. Speaking from personal experiance I have found the work that I have done here for this market/industry to be quite rewarding and beneficial to the more traditional game development work that I do here in this community. There is a lot that you can learn here and many great ways that you can benefit yourself, so please make the most of this opportunity while you still can. I think people from this community can win it, question is can you proove it?

Oooh, the contest started on Halloween last year? Guess we're off to a wee bit of a late start.

Looks like the contest ends 1 July 2005. I wish I would have known about this contest earlier. I have a simple game concept I think will work nicely, I just need to get home where I can download the engine and start working w/ it.

I think the biggest reason for indies struggeling to get into business is that they aim to high with their projects.
Making smaller steps, doing smaller projects that actually make it to the market is in my opinion the better alternative.
This contest seems to be a great opportunity.
Glad you shared it with the comunity.
Maybe you can have the deadline being postponed to give some GarageGames a second chance?

However, I doubt I can pump out a polished product in 22 days. And from what I saw, the only way to get info about the SDK is to register... If I had some idea of what functionality the SDK is offering then I could better gauge if its possible...

I would also like to participate... It's difficult to participate if you didn't know about it. However, I doubt I can pump out a polished product in 22 days.
