Plan for Benoit Touchette

Well after having my third Maxtor drive go down in flames a couple of weeks ago and having everything i was working on lost forever, i vowed to create myself a script which could be launched by cron from cron.daily (being a linux user and all that :) ).
So i have created myself a nice little script to back up my local subversion repository daily to another HD and weekly to a CD-RW disc.
The script can be found at draekko.org/misc/backup.sh .
Enjoy
Note: i am not responsible if this thing eats up your data, your system, you, the universe. Use at your own risk.

Mirrored Arrays are your friend. It's best to spend a little extra and get a real raid card, so you can continue working even if one drive fails. You can do it on the cheap using only windows if you like. My next investment for my work machine is two external firewire drives for just that. I think there is an external drive manufacturer that makes a single unit which has a mirrored array inside it, so it works transparently, that way its still portable between machines.
Try to ensure your drives are not sandwiched between other devices with no space between them, or they get hot.
This ends our public service broadcast, from preachy techy type...... :-)

I sold a bunch of Maxtor and Western Digital drives in the shop, no problems. Samsung on the other hand......Mirrored Arrays are your friend.
