Plan for David House

by David House · 02/27/2005 (4:54 am) · 7 comments

I have been lurking around GG ever since I purchased the SDK ( April 2004 ). I got Finney's book, and have done a couple of prototypes, but nothing all that impressive. All my 3D ideas have been rather complicated until just recently. After playing some 'Rocket Bowl', I realized that i was thinking too high, and should consider more simple designs. So I have a prototype I'm working on now ( no screenshots yet ). I started with a different engine, so I need to port things over to Torque ( only hard part might be the physics stuff, not sure yet ).

At the same time I had been looking at some 2D ideas. Considering some of the entries into the IGF, and some of the other people I know who are making 2D games ( and getting paid for the games! ). I have about a handfull of ideas right now, so I started thinking of reviving a 2D engine I started in 2003 that uses DirectX7. Then of course I keep looking at the screenshots of T2D, and getting very interested. Then the latest screens ( up on the gallery right now ) come out and I'm sold. Purchased it first thing yesterday morning, and played with it off and on all day.

Here is a screenshot of the game as it stands this morning:

The images are just some old icons I had downloaded a long time ago ( free of course ). I just saw them and said, what kind of game could I make using them? When I learn something new, I like to make it applied knowledge so that is what this game was for. Just to learn the T2D engine.

The T2D engine is awesome. I love the world limits on sprites. That is how I setup the lanes and where the fruit stop their falling. Very easy stuff. And the world limit has a callback so when the sprite gets to the end, then I can code the matching logic for the game. I still have to code that part, and put in some sounds and scoring, then its pretty much done. I'll post it on my site, with the source code to the game ( one .cs file at the moment ).

Yeah, I know its not anything close to what some of the folks are doing ( Joshua Dallman! ). But its got me excited again about making games. And its got my son excited about making games again ( thats a different story for another plan ).

I'll post again when its done. Thanks Melv. And thanks Garage Games and community. You will go down in history to be sure.... :)

This .Plan is a prime example of what seems to be the power of T2D. I mean, you said you have had the 3D engine for almost a year and only did a couple of prototypes. And here, 2 days after the release of T2D, you already have a screen shot!

That's some really cool stuff right there.

Also, that was a cool idea with using the Icons. I have no artistic skill and wouldnt have even thought of using icons to learn t2d and make a game.

Good job!

Superb.

Keep those screenies coming guys.

My only criticism of that screenshot is that it makes me hungry. :)

Well done!
