Plan for Craig Fortune
by Craig Fortune · 12/12/2004 (3:07 pm) · 23 comments
Well this weekends GiD was a tad different to most. Most of the regulars (especially the programmers) have either been busy with the typical christmas season hoohar or have had the flu. This has led to a couple of the artists deciding the put the programmers hat on... including me.
I'll make no excuses, I'm not a strong programmer, I'm a complete newb. In university we ahve started learning java programming and as such i thought I'd try doing this GiD by myself in Java... completely leaving out the art side of things. It was scary, but enjoyable ;)
Being new to programming a lot of runtime errors mean nothing to me (ie, i dont understand wth they are on about) and getting unknown errors during a GiD is never nice ;) Thankfully after some playing about I figured out it was my stupidity 100% (Apparently calling object methods is difficult when theres no object, whoever would have thought that ey? lol :D)
Without further ado I present to thee "Dodgy Java applet game." =D

Play Here!
If anyone has a clue why stuff draws a bit wonky when I included double buffering (had to learn how to do that during this GiD too, heh) then please let me know... Stuff is supposed to be circles, but I suppose it kinda gives extra feel to it, nah it just makes it look cack doesn't it? lol
I wanna see people's highscores! I would say about 100 is a midrange score.

Craig, very impressive for an artist! It has a good challenge to it and it is somewhat addicting... It amazes me to see how someone who's a newb can pick up Java quick enough to do a GiD with it.
Awesome Job!
As an extra added challenge:
You may want to make it spawn the red objects in line with the mouse's green collector thingy as the level progresses. Other than that, I give this an A+ for a job well done.

@Brett: Thanks for the nice comments, when I have some time I might include that addition you suggested.

Nice game! Good job, for not being a wizard programmer!
One way in which your game is better than www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/squares2.php is that the bad dots don't get hidden behind the good dots sometimes. :) Squares2 has powerups, which are kinda fun, and the avatar dot grows as you collect things, which is also kinda fun.

Now wait till you get hold of pointer arithmetic and debugging :) hahahaha..
Ok, so we have this thing called a pointer.. its a variable that "points" :) hahahahahaha
Ok. flu taking hold again.

This is a pretty neat little idea. Impressive to see what a non-expert coder can turn out in a day! Surprisingly fun, too - it doesn't try to be more than it is. You should try polishing it up a bit and putting it in your portfolio/resume... Maybe add some graphics and make it into a little browser ad-game or something along those lines to demonstrate your versatility?

Still haven't figured the weird wonkyness bought in with the double buffering tho :/

I think I might possibly work on this over christmas, get nice graphics in, difficulty levels etc etc basicly a big refinement job.Still haven't figured the weird wonkyness bought in with the double buffering tho :/

Oh, and check out www.Arkadium.com... If you convert it to a Flash game and make it head to head(not very hard to do with this), they're looking for simple and fun games... ;)
