Plan for Phil Carlisle

Well, time is moving on. ScaryHead is almost a legal entity, things are moving forward with the AI pack and our first game.

This weekend Mark's been here working on finding somewhere to live. We've also just about got the legal stuff in hand to setup our company (i.e. taking care of companies house, tax man etc). We will post some info about how to do this on our website in a few weeks and I'll post a link on the site for those interested.

Our website is ALMOST ready to go, Mark's been hard at work making the .net code for all the controls on the site, so we can do whatever we want with it. So hopefully I'll be able to do a press release and announcement about the legal formation.

On another note, SLOA (my game) is coming along. Now that Ive gotten some great artwork from Matt Mitman (who has stepped up before, but this time he's really excelling himself if I do say so!) its starting to look more like a game.

Its been pretty fun just watching the monsters walking round chatting to each other. Ive got high hopes for the game feeling really fun AND being cute enough to get non-hardcore gamers interested in playing it.

Dont want to post any shots until we've got some humans in there. You really cant quite tell what it will be like until the humans are in (theyre a big part of the game and right now are blue box guys).

I'm definitely hoping to have a fully playable demo build of the game at IGC. Got some work to do before that, but its definitely possible.

Finally, there's the AI pack stuff. This week has been some work on sensors. Ive still got today to fix some issues with the debug interface for the sensors (stupid me, I was wondering why the debug render code wasnt working, then I remembered the sensors are all server side!, so I'm adding in some code to ghost some render calls over to the client, so you can actually see the sensors in effect!).

Man, the GID wiped me out a bit. This week has been a bit hectic, I'm working over the weekend (student open day) and next week is looking to be pretty hectic too. I just need a few solid weeks of work to get this all down!

Fingers crossed!

Best of luck on Scary Head!! How did you handle the business side? You know you can incorpetate online these days. Are you forming an LLC?

I think its the best way to go. Here are a couple of good links:

Incoperate Online 1

Incorporate Online 2

Thomas Buscaglia is working on an Lawyer in a box legal kit for game developers. It will cover IP rights and other imporatnt legal contracts. He swears it will be ready by INDY games con 2004.

Here is my take on it:

Starting your own Game Company

Again best of luck!!

Hi Britton.

We're uk based, so a lot of that doesnt really count.

But we have similar things, online incorporation. Mark's doing the business setup side of things (he gets to be company secretary too), so I'll get him to write something up for the website.

Its all moving forward, which is the main part.

Very Cool Phil! I forgot you are in the UK. Do you think you could do a write up on what it took to get started? I'd like to add it to our "starting your own game company" section in the forums at Game Beavers. There is a lot of tallent in the UK so I'm sure more than one person has the same interest.

I'm sure your write up would be a big help to a lot of people. Personally I'd like to know what all is involved, and what the differences are. I'd preserve it at GB if you post it here as well.
