Plan for Eli McClanahan

by Eli McClanahan · 06/16/2004 (2:45 am) · 8 comments

It's been a long time since I filled out a plan, mostly because I've done nothing but work (non-officially, just community submissions) with the next possible, sanctioned Starsiege game (Starsiege: 2845), which can be found here. Drawing Cybrids is a lot of fun. Writing fanfictions is also a lot of fun, just time consuming and unfulfilling at times since you don't get as much feedback since anyone can write words.

Right now, I'm mainly drawing concept art for a new game that will be using the TSE enhancements, hopefully. I don't even know if I can say anything about it, actually. I'm still trying to nail the style the game needs, although my latest attempts apparently have hit the nail on the edge of the head.

I'm hoping that the TGE editor remains largely intact for TSE, and that I can even have the same liberties as I did with making maps for Realm Wars. I downloaded the demo and was dissapointed that it was a virtual showcase and didn't have any visible interactivity, which is understandable.

Hopefully I'll be able to show some of the concepts for the new game soon, if anyone is even reading this. I'll just say this is a "teaser."

I can always offer a link to my little storage space of all my other concepts. I'm rather ashamed of most of them though, since I normally don't try very hard on them, so most of them look horrendous.

I think your concept art is great... sure, it could use a bit more polish but more often than not you don't have time. I'm just glad to see you're back after a long hiatus.

It seems there a few great concept artists blossoming around these parts, and that's awesome to see. We need more of us. :)

You got some nice stuff there Eli but like Paul i would like to see you polish some of these, even if it's just inking some of them.

I noticed some returning anatomy problems in your drawings of hummans, especially on the arms. You might want to have a good look at that. I know your not aiming for a realistic style still i think spending more time on the anatomy of your figures would help a great deal.

At the last IGC I followed the art track and all the masters there Joe / Pascal / Danny / Logan etc. all made the same point. Good art takes reasonable skill and a LOT of time :) There's a lot of great stuff there, excellent starting points for various models etc.

I think the repeated 'mistakes' in the anatomy are called style ;)

I whole-heartedly disagree on the writing though, anyone can write true, but anyone can draw / sing etc. Doesn't mean they're any good at it. If I recall you did the Realm Wars back story way back? That was really top notch! Some people neglect the need for a strong back story in a game, I think it's one area that us indies can easily better our commercial brethren. Creating Emotion in Games was a very good book on this. The real success for an indie seems to be in building a brand, and the story / background can really help do this.

You have any links to your tribes fan-fiction? That would be top!

Good luck with TSE, and 'Welcome Back' :)

Pascal, the pics aren't loading on your anatomy link. :(

Here's a really nice anatomy reference site I've used for a few years.

Everyone: I can't believe you read this.

Pascal: About the arms, yeah. Another thing I tend to do is make the shoulders too wide, especially on armored concepts. I really wish I could just sit outside and draw what I see or look at anatomy charts, but I just don't have the time of day to draw that often anymore. But, watching myself get better is half the fun. Those first concepts you pointed out I actually drew about... two years ago, I think. I have a history of problems with proportions, and they come back sometimes.

Gareth: Yeah, I did the Realm Wars backstory (surprised anyone remembers this, or me for that matter), but I'm not sure if it'll be used, with James stepping down and RW sort of on hold/creeping forward because of everyone's time constraints. Anyway, it's certainly true that not everyone can write-write, but I personally think it's much easier to get better at than something like drawing. Being imaginative and creative, on the other hand, you can't learn from anything but experiences you choose for yourself. The fanfiction I've written wasn't for Tribes, but for Starsiege, the game Starsiege: Tribes' universe came out of. ...I shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition, bleh. You can find the few completed ones I've "published" online here. Like my drawings, I didn't go over them a second time. In fact, the 3k or so word story "Flesh" I wrote I finished in one night. I'm currently working on Wings of Damnation, although interest in it is pretty much gone since it's spanning such a long amount of time. Anyway. I could be a lot better at both writing and drawing if I bothered to make them more professional and less of a fun hobby; perhaps I'm fearful of failing? Probably not. I actually reworked my Realm Wars stuff many times though.

That fineart site is very nice. I shall abuse its bandwith readily.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I expected to see none. :p
