Well I have finished reading The Indie Game Development Survival Guide and I am ready to begin my design document. I have done the market research and believe their is a market for my game. I spent last night reading 100's of posts in the indie business section at www.dexterity.com one of the successful indie business's on the web looking for tips on how the big boys became successful. I learned that having a strong sales and marketing system and having well defined monthly and yearly revenue goals are crucial to success. Simply putting a complete game on a website and registering with download.com is not even remotely enough no matter how fun your game is to play. Also I learned that patience, persistence and great customer support are crucial. I was surprised to learn that most indie games make money gradually over months and years. In fact many of the most successful indie games make more money in their 6,7 and yes even 8th year than they do in their first 5 years. My first 2 goals are to finish my design document and from that generate a complete task list with time estimates to generate a complete schedule for the game.
