Plan for Rhonda Smith

www.abbadons-curse.com/logo.jpgThe first incarnation of the 'Official' Abbadon's Curse logo is done, and I'm quite happy with it. I'm suprised to say it only took about an hour in paint shop pro, I guess I should have stopped putting off doing it and just gotten on it way back when. In my defense I did get alot of mapping and NPC's done while I was procrastinating ;)

We are moving in April, we as a family, not a development team, which means my contributions to the progress of the game this month are likely to be less concrete then this logo for a little while, but that's okay because we are currently at the 'breathing' stage. We all needed to take a deep breath before diving in head first.

All the basic design documents are now done - not all the documents period, but all the base ones that help layout what the game is going to be and basically how it is going to work. MadCapMac is working on some programmer specific stuff, and Andrew is writing up the database schema, but we don't have a deadline on those things yet, because, as I said, we are all taking a deep breath before diving right in.

Once we have taken this breath, we are going to dive in head first - and I mean really get to work. We are looking to add a couple more programmers and artists to the team to make up for the recent shuffling of members we went through. Basically from now on in if you don't put out, you will have to get out. I have to much time and energy invested in this game to watch the idea die because of lack of motivation or action...the 'talked to death' stage is not going to be permanent-we are taking a breath and thing diving headfirst into the 'getting stuff done' phase.

Time to get things done....I want screenshots to show prospective members, I want our heightfields pumped into the engine, I want...well I want alot of things, time to go out and get them ;)

I really like that logo! I wish i could do that in Paint Shop Pro.

Good luck with all of the moving house etc :-) and would love to see more of your work.

1. Good job, glad to hear it's working out so well.

-- Actual critiques go here--

2. Ugly-ass text for the logo title. The rest of the logo looks ok, very smooth, and the color ranges all complement each other nicely, so it doesn't look discontinuous except for the logo text. Definitely have someone give that a little lovin'.

2a. Personal preference -- I dislike the use of curved text for the logo. It seems to add very little to the image except some visual confusion. Perhaps with the text cleaned up, this will not be an issue. I'd suggest, if possible, reducing the severity of the curve as well. But the overall 'arched text' look you have there doesn't seem terribly viewer-friendly -- the tendency is not to scan in a circle like that.

3. You are definitely going to want to have someone do a little real logo work in Illustrator -- even though a lot of people, especially freedom-loving indies, might scoff at the value of such indirect enhancements, the fact is that when you are coordinating talent over such a wide area, image is extremely important -- not to mention if you are thinking of going the publisher route. It helps to ground and establish a team if there is a real logo for both the company and the particular game in question.

--End critiques--

4. I was extremely tempted to make a double-entendre post involving possible application of the Curves feature in Photoshop. But I'm going to pass on that. ;)
