Plan for Justin Brown

Greetings all...

First things first - this is my first .plan posting, so be gentle :)

Basically, I'm going to be running a couple of development projects in the very near future, and using this .plan as my soapbox - my own personal vessel for bitching about the state of the world, state of the union, and state of the code...heh...actually it won't be JUST for bitching, but if you see an overly negative plan posting from me, you can be sure it hasn't been a very good 26 hours for yours truly.

Now...the "officialy unofficial" announcement of Project 1...

It will be a Quake Engine based game...well, loosely based anyway...Given that id decided to GPL Classic Quake and Quake2, there's no good reason NOT to use at least some of it, right? The GL renderer will be rebuilt from the ground up, as will be the sound system. Software rendering has already been ripped out (and rather violently I might say!!!), since I took a sledgehammer to the (still working) 486 in my garage a few months ago...What's going to be added? Q3/MOH BSP support, Doom3 BSP support (when specs become available - I hope), PK3 (uncompressed ZIP) replacing PAK system...TGA,JPG,PNG,GIF,BMP and AVI loading...MP3 (MP4???) music support...New particle system...You get the idea, there's enough changes going on to almost say it's not a Quake Engine anymore, but out of respect for John Carmack, and the rest of id - it *is* a quake engine...just happens to be how I think it should be evolving :)

And yeah...It is a FPS...A bloody, messy, don't-let-your-kids-play-this-till-they're 18 - and maybe even later than that kind of FPS (wouldn't want to be accused of training the next kid who goes postal)...

Project#2...A Torque Engine game...Now if only the exchange rate between Canadian and US funds would become a bit more stable...

I'd recommend trying OGRE instead of the quake sources.. unless your really set on using C.

OGRE does look interesting. I was going to play with it when they add terrain support.
