Plan for Matt Sayre

I'm currently cranking out the music for Myrmidon from 21-6 Productions and it's been a great experience so far. At this stage in Myrmidon's development, I'm able to continue to experiment with making my orchestra sound as authentic as possible. Using live brass helps a great deal to establish the authentic sound I'm looking for, but recording a solo horn, for instance, and getting that to sit appropriately within the orchestra has been a challenge. Nothing beats the reverb of a real hall and the biggest challenge has been getting that sound duplicated as realistically as possible from within my studio. Getting closer!

I've played trombone and tuba since grade school, picked up the horn my freshman year of college, and then the trumpet last year when I decided seriously to pursue this crazy dream of doing music (and sound) for games full time. Recording 11 brass lines can be tiring (3 trumpets, 2 horn parts doubled, 3 trombones, tuba) and at times I just want to throw my hands up in the air and go with Dan Dean brass but brass samples still have a long way to go. The newest Dan Dean Ensemble library has decent horns and trombones but the trumpets still scream "I'm a sample". I wish the sample creators all the luck in the world but for now they just aren't close enough for me. Also, I would still say it takes me less time to record the brass myself than to get a sample library to do what I want. My chops would disagree of course.

Since starting my studio earlier this year, I've also had to take on the challenges of starting a new business. Up to now, I've been concentrating mostly on straightening out the musical process itself... soundproofing and familiarizing myself with the new studio, learning the new software, learning the samples, finding the best mic placements, creating demos, etc. I knew that if I wasn't happy with the music I was creating, no way could I seriously present myself to game developers. Now the "marketing" has begun. It's unnatural for me but something I'm going to have to learn in order to succeed. I've been perusing "The Complete Guide to Game Audio" by Aaron Marks (listed on GG's resources pages) and it will be a great help.

I was lucky enough to land the work for Myrmidon even before I had a studio ready. Myrmidon's going to be something special and it'll be a wild ride as we continue to work on and finish this game. I regret not being at the GDC where they got to play Myrmidon in front of a crowd and hear my music through the big ol' speakers. Next year!

Now for some of that work I was talking about... first up, something I had to write after listening to the Pink Panther soundtrack (only a trombone for brass- and yes, that's me singing hehe):

Mincy Hare Inn

A bit more brass in this short piece:

Don Juan

And finally, a test piece I used to compare with the original Jerry Goldsmith Recording (transcribed by myself):

Logan's Run Main Theme

I must recommend the Garritan strings... they're capable of that warm Mancini sound as well as the huge Hollywood sound. And Gary (Garritan) updates like you wouldn't believe. Anyway, I thought I would contribute a little something here about my experience in this crazy industry so far, seeing as how GarageGames has been a positive figure in it already.
