I uploaded a demo of the grass/foliage so you can try it out.

Very cool!
I really like how you have the options working with that F5 key. btw I just looked at it at work with my lousy PIII-800, with a Matrox Millennium G400 and it worked fine. I can tell it slows down, but it doesn't run fast on this system to begin with. I'm sure it will work great on a real gaming system.

Your demo displays the player model in first person view; when you look down you can see your hands and feet. How did you do this?

Mike, there's a setting in the player datablock that allows you to render the player.

Oh I didn't realise that. Thanks a lot.

Looks good, even on my Pentium II-400 w/ GeForce 2 MX. On "Grass Fest", with no modifications, I was seeing FPS of 15-20. Hardly *great*, but not bad considering the hardware.

Runs EXCELLENT on my Athlon 1.4 Ghz and GeForce 3 with 512 megs of ram under WinXP Pro.

Here's a screenshot:

Yep, I had fun running them over too ;)

Just one thing to keep in mind. When you spawn about 50 of them, DO NOT walk in front of them. You end up dying rather quickly.

This is awesome. I haven't had any time at all lately for GG stuff (though I have been busy with some cool realtime work - check it out), but I just had to test this.

Ran great on my 1.5ghz P4, Quadro4 900XL.

Very cool demo! Grass makes a huge difference in the feel of the terrain and in the perceived speed of movement over the ground. Some ideas:

- On the sway hack, just move the tops of the grass, not the bottom (I'm sure you've thought of this one :) )
- Alpha out the bottom of the grass near the player towards the ground so as to remove the sharp grass/ground edge when looking down.
- Get the light intensity of the ground point on which the grass sits.
- Extend the possible visible distance of the grass by reducing the density of the rendered grass farther away from from the player.
