Plan for Scott Schaefer

by Scott Schaefer · 04/25/2002 (12:52 pm) · 7 comments

The other day I was working on my mortar projectile for "Dust Off" and a good friend stopped by with a little Guiness+Harp=Black&Tan love. We got to playing around with trajectories and what not and started working towards a "golf ball" projectile.

Anyway, we started to have way too much fun with this (was it the beer?) and I was wondering if anyone was making a golf game? I just wanted to work on a simple little game when not building content for Dust Off. I was thinking of something original like golf on different planets with different gravity's, etc... More of a family fun game. I just want to make sure nobody is working on something like this, I don't want to ruin anyone's plans. I think it could be a fun little time burner and the TGE is PERFECT for it.

I'd just like to know what you guys think, or if anyone else is doing something like this.

Ever seen MiniGolf Master: Miniverse?

I've never played it, but it's pretty close to what you're talking about. Except it's mini-golf instead of "real" golf.

This sounds like a perfect Community Project. I have always thought that an un-"mini"golf would be cool where you have similar objectives but instead of having 15 feet to the cup you actually dealt with 300-500 yards. You could have precision driving, slicing, chipping etc from "objective" to objective with a few "hole in one" perfect shots on each hole. Kinda think mixing Minigolf themes, mix in some TIM (Incredible Machine), and your standard golf physics and interface. That could be fun....silly but fun.

We did a very successful Mini-Golf game at Dynamix. I love this idea of either a mg or a real golf game on GG. These games sell themselves. The name tells all.

Alright! Golf it is. I already got a good buddy who's a C++ master unlike me ready to roll, no pun intended.....Film at 11:00

This is going to be fun!

*edit* The wheeled vehicle code would be perfect for driving around golf carts!

I know I just edited my above post, but I can't believe the feedback i've gotten from just my bonehead group of friends for a game like this. (you know, the buddys that you have that sit there in awe at the fact you can actually make something "different" happen on a computer :)

This will actually give me time to finish my war game models and let the TGE evolve in the capable hands of the community and staff (see Torque roadmap under NEWS ;). Like I said, the TGE is overqualified for this endeavor "out of the box" making it an exciting project.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Are you going to include minefields and AI attacks from the woods?

No, I suppose not. As fun as Armored Combat Golf sounds, what you are describing might draw a bigger crowd.

On the other hand, some off-course AI lobbing mortars and creating unexpected 'sand-traps' could really pump up the... ah, nevermind.

That's the beauty! If you nail gameplay on the golf side of it, you could put any "skin" you want over the top and it would still be fun.

I think your ideas are good ones. Every "course" could have a different theme, etc... That would require way too much modelling of characters, unless people pitched in with their own models. How 'bout this. Everyone could plug in their own Torque model. Just an idea.

Thanks for the input...
