Get "The Reef" code from GitHub

This code represents a years work by myself (Joti Carroll) and Paul Gaze while working at Queensland University of Technology for the Cube project, an installation for a new building recently constructed. We worked on a project called The Reef designed to represent a sample of the diversity of life on the Great Barrier Reef and be engaging to the general public and potential students. After delivering the content QUT agreed to release all of the code generated by the project to the torque open source community.
This video was created by our lead animator Warwick Mellows:
You can get the code and demo content here:

We had a great team for this project. You always want to do more but for the first time I think I'm happy with the result we achieved. Especially given all the factors that come to play on a project like this.
Warwick Mellows our animator, comes from the recently closed THQ Brisbane studios and is outstanding. He did all the cinematic's for the big animals and a bunch of fish too. As well as a bunch of work for the other projects. He also had to model and rig stuff, gave him a rash but he does it well.
Ariel Chai and Ren Quan are both excellent contractors I've been using for years. They modelled and animated a bunch of fish, Ren did most of them because Ariel wasn't around much at first.
Sean Gobey was part time though he still managed to produce work for many of the cubes projects as well as the base reef mesh and the whale mesh's.
I processed and optimise everything and fixed or generated textures for whatever needed it. I also created the coral and textured the reef.
We are all available for employment at the moment so if anyone needs some skilled operators drop me an email and I can put you in touch.

Outstanding work, thank you for open-sourcing this after all the time you and your team have put into it.

That is breath taking. Does the University own the art assets? Because I don't think I am alone in being willing to pay money to have a sea turtle and a beautiful fish try to eat my fingers. That would be really neat on a tablet.

Yes they own all the art assets and some of them are altered versions of turbosquid purchases as well, so they can not be resold with out permission from that artist as well. I don't believe QUT are looking at anything like that at the moment. Although if your not looking to reproduce specific animals you can purchase animated models and use them with the reef code quite easily. Beyond a basic swim loop all you need is two blend animations to bend the the spine for left and right turns.

This is amazing. I just started working on my Skin Diver (spearfishing) video game, I've been planning for a couple of months, and the scripts gave me a big head start on fish AI.

The more I see this video the more I love the idea of using your fish swimming code. This will save me some time. Thanks!
