WinterLeaf Entertainment MMO Character Update #2 (video)

by Tim · 12/28/2012 (6:06 pm) · 12 comments

Hi folks. You may have seen Vince's and Paul's postings from the technical side of WLE including DotnetTorque and more recently Oneworld.

Well its safe to say that the art department at WLE has been working hard behind the scenes on our MMO Character Art for our own game Dawn of Ascension for some time. While our focus is on producing our MMO game we intend to release a series of art packs along the way. I posted back early in July(ish) about how we were starting this process and we have been quiet since but I can assure you we have been working like crazy in the background on a daily basis to work our MMO character system through its paces to where we are now.

To this end I have posted below a demo reel showing 'some' of the features we are building into our game and character system......The video was filmed in Torque.

I hope you enjoy watching it and I will update you soon on when we expect to be releasing our first pack.

Not bad! Too bad, I'm not doing a RPG or I'll be all over that. Whoever did the background art did a fantastic job! I hope I can find some one that is just as good for our project.
One question about the art pack, is it just female characters in it? Good luck!

Thanks Kory, yes our environment artist is something special. We do plan on releasing some of that in packs in the near future as we progress, so I'll keep you up to speed on that.

In respect of just females, no we are doing a full suite of characters, male and female. Ill be producing a demo of the full range shortly but given its been a while since the last blog we wanted to get something out before the end of 2012.....and its close....

Good to see your female characters don't have Manblivion disease.

The artwork looks really good!

Thanks Frank - yes we are really trying to avoid that in our characters

the eyes are jet black on purpose. thats the writers concept of the race.

Figured. Thought I would ask though. Perhaps add at least a specular?

Ill run that by everyone and have them try it.

Thanks Ron, yes a few people have mentioned this. The characters shown are pretty much our basic race style as determined by our writer for Dawn of Ascension but we do acknowledge that this is a personal style and therefore our Character Packs will have normal eyes. A quick video link below to show this is below.

Looks nice Tim, I've recently bought a IBook called Japanese Fantasy Manga, it's got some good fantasy character types. I'm looking to use this as some food for thought when it comes to character and monster design. Check it out your might like it.

Not bad at all. Nice work with the eye blinking and movement. I get where you are going with your game character, I just think by adding the eye stuff it makes it more universal as far as a pack.

Very nice.
