Doubloons!

Doubloons! is a small, fast-paced, and hopefully fun take on the classic coin matching puzzel game. This game is my first fully independent project, and my first foray into independent iPhone publishing.

The game is a couple of weeks away from completion (just awaiting the final splash screen and App Store icons), but all development work is essentially complete.

Whats even more exciting is that I'll be releasing the source code and resources as a pack for Torque2D and iTorque2D.

I've been developing games professionally for around five years now. My previous role was as Developer Coordinator and Senior Programmer at the Tokyo studio of Gameloft. I purchased the Torque Game Builder several years ago and tapped away at my keyboard, working on my game whenever I had a moment available (which wasn't often).

A couple of months ago I had a one week vacation and decided to turn the PC game I had been working on into an iPhone game (yeah, I know, sounds like a pretty fun vacation!). So I purchased iTorque2D and spent the week turning the Torque2D version of my game into an iPhone game.

The week passed and I managed to get it 90% complete. I asked the artists who worked on the original artwork to draw me up a new splash screen and App Store icons, and in the mean time I concentrated on the App Store paperwork, debugging and testing.

Now I'm just a few weeks away from releasing. As soon as my icons come back from the artists I can start the Apple approval process and then release.

But here is where I hope the Torque community will start getting excited.

As I was writing the PC version of the game, I also wrote some in-depth tutorials on how to code the game. These tutorials include everything from setting up the project, scripting the movement of the sprites, adding two-player networking, and even how to obfuscate your resources to prevent piracy.

At the moment these tutorials come in at around 160 pages, and I am currently trying to clean everything up and make the final PDF document.

In addition to these tutorials, I also plan to release all of the game scripts and artwork. Pending approval from GarageGames, I'll be packaging these up to sell through the GarageGames store.

It is my hope that this pack will address some of the issues that novice game developers face when trying to make a game with Torque2D, namely that there is currently no in-depth example that takes you right through how to make a game from concept to release. This pack will aim to solve this problem by detailing all the steps you'll encounter along the way.

I'm interested to find out how valuable such a resource would be to the Torque community. How much would you be willing to pay for a pack that included everything you needed to make a small puzzle game?

In the mean time, please head over to samuelcartwright.com.au and take a look at some screen shots. And if you're interested in playing Doubloons! keep checking back and I'll let you know when it releases on the App Store.

Hi,

Game looks cool. I have a similar game from PopCaps called Tumblecaps on my iPhone. Looking forward to see how the cannons and monkeys come in to play. :)

Screen shots look great and very professional.

I am interested in the Tutorials and will gladly pay for them as long as they are good quality and deliver what they promise. Seen too many Tutorials promise a lot and deliver nothing. :(

Good luck with the game and look forward to seeing it in the AppStore and getting my hands on your tutorials.

Hi guys,

Just a quick update.

My game just went live on the App Store today.

... tutorials are taking a bit longer though, now that I've started a new job.
