Character Packs for Torque - work in progress #1
by Jules · 03/17/2012 (4:37 pm) · 9 comments

We're working with a very talented artist in our team to produce some character packs that are Torque ready, and wanted your feedback on the current model. We'll also be providing a free tutorial and a series of video links on how this was made.
3 Levels of detail, highest being around 17652 tris, medium around 8917 tris, and the lowest around 4066 tris. We're going to be adding animations to this model in the next few weeks so if there is a specific animation you'd like to see, we'd like to know about it. General fighting, flying and death animations will be standard, along with a chest piece that opens up to show a human inside (optional).
We may also create a value added bundle for the character with some supporting props, surrounding environment, and maybe a few extra textures for creating different teams.
Your thoughts? thanks.

Thanks. I guess the two lowest would be for in-game use and the highest poly for cinematic scenes.

Now that that's out of the way, that model looks ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!
I'm curious however, about the bot's arms. Is this a firefighter droid? A gardner droid? Yeah, I'll be grabbing anything like this. As long as the price is right, of course.
As this is WIP is there any chance I can put in an early request? I'm enjoying rendering in Daz Studio, and was hoping you could include some .fbx source for importing into Daz Studio, please? Actually most .obj come in with textures and all, ready to render, but I cannot import any .dts objects without the textures etc all mixed up. I don't know if this sort of thing appeals to you guys, but it would make me very happy at least!
Also, are the packs going to be in the form of: 1 model, 6 textures (incl. normal, spec, bump), readme, etc., or will you be releasing them based on theme, like Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Modern, etc?

Yeah the poly count does seem very high to me as well. I'm more concerned with the LODs though. 4k for the lowest will pretty much kill my system with some of the crowd stuff I have. Now that that's out of the way, that model looks ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

This robo model looks great. I would like if it have every standart animation like the soldier from 1.2. Also the first person arms etc. some different sitting animation, for cars, would be nice too. Also a good idea could be a set of weapons to this model.Great work!

Just to chime in on polys, I'd suggest LODing right back to a stick figure or silhouette, it's surprising how fast you lose visible detail with distance.

@Dan - I to have come to enjoy rendering in Daz3D. I use Unwrap3D Pro for converting to DTS and back to FBX. It works very well.

@S2P - Very nice looking models. I will buy them when your done. I like to have some melee or standard punch and kick motions.@Dan - I to have come to enjoy rendering in Daz3D. I use Unwrap3D Pro for converting to DTS and back to FBX. It works very well.

We'll have various file formats available + source.
Dan - bots arms are weapons - I guess laser/plasma or even fire small rockets from them. We'll probably have 1 base pack with 2 textures for team A/B, and then another supporting pack with extra textures/environment models, maybe weapon attachments for more teams.
Edit: how about camoflage textures, red/blue teams?

Thanks for the feedback guys. We'll create more levels of detail, so at least you can go down to as many AI or players in the game. But have the higher levels of detail for cut-scenes/cinematics.We'll have various file formats available + source.

If you have an "urban" camo (black, grey and white) then we can edit the colours to suit virtually any environment. Just free-flowing here.
@Robert - Thanks for the tip mate! I really want to render the Soldier.
Anyway, I'm quite looking forward to seeing these packs in the store.
[Edit: The shoulders on that bot remind me of Metroid. A lot.]

Maybe YOU use plasma weapons, but MY bot's gonna be an uber firefighter! If you have an "urban" camo (black, grey and white) then we can edit the colours to suit virtually any environment. Just free-flowing here.

one suggestion i would make though is to add a attachment to the arms that give the character hands.
other than that, very nice mate. good job so far.
