Chinatown Game Design - Contest #5

by Geoff Beckstrom · 02/27/2012 (3:07 pm) · 38 comments

Give us your best elevator pitch for a game designed around Chinatown. Anyone can join by downloading the Torque 3D demo which comes with the Chinatown assets.

Zombie invasion into Chinatown???..... mm probably need to get a bit more creative than that.

ET visits Chinatown?.......

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

The winner will be judged on 3 categories:

1. Best game title
2. Most creative story line
3. Visual presentation

Enter the contest by submitting a you tube video as a comment to this blog. What should be in the video? That is up to you. It might be screen shots, a commercial for your game, or actual game footage.

Submissions are due by 11:59 AM PST Friday March 2nd and a winner will be decided shortly after community power hour ends. The winning entry will receive $159 in first party store credit to their GG account.

Game on!

Are we doing an elevator pitch or a demo of our elevator pitch in Torque3D. My understanding of an elevator pitch is an overview of an idea for a game that can be delivered in the time span of an elevator ride. About 30 - 60 seconds or written it's about 100 to 150 words.

So am I to understand that we are to make a youtube video that is about 30 - 60 seconds long that represents a game we would do in the Chinatown environment?

I wish I could but I don't think there's a mac version of the demo or at least I tried to download it off the link and it was a windows version.

I could make a top down version in T2D ;)

These contests are greats but I never have the time right now, a lot of work with "GameAlchemy Pack", the delay is too short...

I encourage everyone to participate if they can. Good luck!

@Philip - $159 in first party store credit. I had it in the blog preview, but not the body. Thanks for the heads up.

@Glenn - Our goal with these contests is to hit as many different aspects of game development as possible. Your understanding of the contest is correct - develop a game idea around Chinatown. Don't feel limited by the Chinatown theme - feel free to modify, skin, or change the Chinatown assets to match your ideas. We do not currently have a mac version of the T3D demo so a T2D version with the same idea (a game designed that happens in Chinatown) would be acceptable for this contest.

Thank you to everyone for the supportive comments and we are impressed every week by the great entries we see in these contests and the great work we see published by the community! If you have any requests or ideas for the contests feel free to email me - geoffb@garagegames.com

i like this contest. I have an idea but unfortunately there is not enough time to visualize it.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

oh an after thought here,

this idea is a rather large one from the way it reads, so have you guys thought of maybe one small contest per week, but then there is a larger contest started at the beginning of each month that lasts all month long? i think this one would fit in nicely with that time frame, would give people enough time to conceive and produce a idea with a video.

"Zombie invasion into Chinatown???..... mm probably need to get a bit more creative than that."

With all due respect.. If the Chinese zombies happen to know kung fu, I think it might have potential.

That tempts me to buy some kungfu animations from someone, the zombie art pack, and have someone rig the animations...

Too bad I just bought a Harley yesterday -_-

Kung Fu Zombies........I like where this is going.

@Roland: This is a contest that could become a large time commitment, but you could also out together a quality 30 second presentation rather quickly. We aren't looking for a professional video but creativity and quality game design. For now we are going to stick to weekly smaller contests but a number of people have shown interest in a larger and longer contest so we will see.

I do have a loose storyline that would fit this - but couldn't have anything done this week - getting home late - maybe if this had been announced friday and i had the weekend... - don't know, maybe.

I'll see if i can get anything done tonight - 17:14 PM here now - If not, i will post it here as straight out text tomorrow, even though it leaves me out of the contest.

Good luck to all that apply.

Great work has been sown in this competitions - great idea from GG

Haha it's nice to see the contests to stir up the community. I have tons of work to do so I can't make a video but here is a game design / pitch for someone to leech.

Chinatown - Wok you lookin at!

Hungry after a long days work? Chinese food sound good?
As you head into Chinatown. Wow so many sidewalk food shops!
Which one will I choose! Better pick fast or they will pick for you
as the mob of Chinese cooks walks towards you with woks in hand.

Can you make it to the five star Golden Buddha in time or will you be
forced to eat chow mein at one of the second rate sidewalk shops in, Chinatown - Wok you lookin at!
