Particle Effects - Contest #4

by Geoff Beckstrom · 02/17/2012 (2:04 pm) · 23 comments

I asked Suckerfree games' cat about her thoughts on next weeks contest and luckily Maribel isn't in charge!

We have had great success in our first three weeks of contests and appreciate the humor, creativity, and efforts of everyone who has submitted official entries and to those who have provided their own work even if they were late to the contest or submitting old work just to help support the efforts! You guys are awesome.

This week's theme is Particle Effects. You will be judged on both the programming aspect of the effect as well as the artistic delivery and look of the effect. You can submit either a 2D or a 3D effect, or one of each.

The winner will receive $159 in first party store credit. But there is a twist. We want to encourage some collaboration. So any programmer who joins up with an artist (or vice verse) for the winning entry BOTH will receive a separate $159 first party store credit prize. This could be a great way for programmers to reach out and make some artist contacts or for some of you artists out there to get some publicity for your work!

Entries must be presented as a comment to this blog no later than 11:59 AM PST February 24th and we will determine a winner by the end of Community Power Hour.

Game On!

I guess it doesn't qualify as an entry because I created it a long time ago but I get a lot of positive feedback and I don't have time to do a new one.

I think the contests are great though.

Ouuu. Great contest. If the contestants can upload their particles for everyone to use that would be great! 2d particles please...

Sorry you feel that way Szzg007, but there are still many more contests to come. Keep watching for the announcements of future contests, I'm sure there will be others to your liking.

I had a really awesome idea. I lack the programming and artistic ability to pull it off >.<

Would the fire particles we did for AoD count as a submission?

Here's my supporting blog entry (with a link to a google doc function that breaks down the script for an early version of the 'circle' effect)

Here are some particle effects using animated particles, I didn't make the texture files, I just set all the attributes in the script files.

The player is also firing from the mount nodes in his hands.

Here's my humble entry. Worked on the foot puffs all week to get them just right. Might be a bit Skyward Sword influenced.

Particles Yay! Hope a ton of people enter this one, can't have enough particles IMHO.

Great job everyone! After a rather heated debate here in the office, we have come to a decision. We are awarding the prize to A.F. for his entry. The quality and the coolness factor played into the decisions of those who voted for it.

We loved seeing people using both 2D and 3D engines and making particles, and some really fun stuff came out of it. Thank you all for participating!

We'll announce the next contest on Monday.
