Plan for David Myers

I've been too much of a lurker here at GG while working hard on our baby Myrmidon, so I'm going to seriously try to get more involved here. It's tough to try to get something serious accomplished on a game such as Myr while working on it part-time, and then also contribute anything of significance to the GG community at large. We're going to try to step it up a bit though in the near future (like Phil C. and Tim N. have been lately - good job fellas), as we think it's very important to help others get through things we have struggled with in the past.
I posted a thread on trying to enhance terrain rendering to support larger than 256x256 maps, so if you have any interest in helping with this effort by all means post a reply there. I'll try to keep the thread alive as I find time to investigate how to make a change to the engine to support that. Hopefully we can get it solved (with a little help from GG), as it's currently not high on the GG priority list I believe.
On the gaming front:
I am the proud new owner of a Compaq iPaq (Xmas present), and I am really interested in the future of handheld and wireless gaming as a result. I am completely addicted to Bubble Shooter (of all things) by Absolutist currently. There is a Wireless Game Summit at the GDC this year that I would have liked to attend, but it's not included in the classic pass for some reason, therefore I'd have to spend an addition $300 to attend - and it is held on the same day as one of the GDC lecture days - Saturday. Not sure why it was done like that, but it would've been interesting to attend.

I'm not entirely sure which option is best - to allow support for larger than 256x256 maps or to simply allow multiple maps. The latter seems like it is less troublesome, as we probably don't have to worry as much about hard-coded assumptions.

i think its better to allow larger maps tho :\

I was thinking that bumping it up from 256 to 512 by itself would do nicely - that map is going to be pretty damned large. I'm hoping that Mark F. will give us some feedback on this soon, as he is the resident guru on this stuff and could probably get us pointed in the right direction quickly.

However, I think we should petition (or somesuch) to get it higher on the priority list for garagegames. A lot of games (especially the solo ones) are going to need larger map sizes, and it'd really help to have garagegames working on that.
