Community Power Hour 2012

by David Montgomery-Blake · 01/06/2012 (12:14 pm) · 32 comments

With the new year we want to reach out to the community and ask - what would you like to see for community power hour?

Currently a number of employees jump into the IRC room which if you are new to the community you can find at:

IRC Server: irc.maxgaming.net
IRC Port: 6667
Channel: #GarageGames

Other employees will jump into the forums and blogs to help answer questions or add their thoughts to a discussion.

As we make plans for 2012 this is your chance to get your two cents in. We are committed to directly engaging the community for an hour every Friday. So let us know what you would like to do with that time!

David,

Any chance we can get live streaming of you singing karaoke in that costume you wore for New Years Eve when you were down on Fremont Street?

I'm thinking that that can be arranged.

How about ocasionally (all things permiting) get a live stream interview with either community members about their projects or in house personell about the path ahead for the engines and the company - aswell as (on both) their personal experiences.

Beeing live it could be open to community questions

Interviews could be held either in person when possible or over skype or similar

Great suggestions! And this is exactly the kind of stuff that Geoff and I talk about when looking at the community hours for 2012!

how about a mini version of the help for a day where a community member volunteer's their game for anything from help testing to advice and suggestions on making it better?

What's that, did I hear a request for a live talk radio show about game development?

*Scott and Mich's amateur talk radio fantasies become renewed*

Unfortunately I can't attend the power hours due to work constraints but a question I would have is if GG plans on championing community products more? I don't use Corona SDK but I do like how much they promote their communities projects.

We try to support community projects through interviews, blogs, banners, etc. But it's definitely on Chris and I's radar to support community projects more. Even though it ended up as a project spam den, that was one of the things I really liked about the *VERY* old GG site design.

I'm always looking for new content to post to our social channels such as Facebook and Twitter. I would be more than happy to promote our communities projects, Blogs, and Resources through it. If you are interested send me an email to: chris@garagegames.com and I will see to it.

I really would love to see the radio show back! A weekly summary / discussion of what happened both in the game dev world and in the Torque community. Live or not live - for me it doesn't really matter, nor does the length of it that much. Just make it happen each week. :)

Send newsletters more frequently! If you don't have content for it, create developer interviews! I'd really like to get to know how Steve came up with the Bunny shoe chick (who by now I am hopelessly obsessed with).

Another thing I'd like to see you do is create small new features - one at a time - for the website so it feels more like it's 2012. A Google +1 or a Facebook Like / Share option would go a long way - and there are plenty of other 5 minute ninja things you could do to make it more useful for us.

Finally, create competitions, so I don't have to! Really, it would be fun! And finally I would be eligible to compete!

Oh, and create polls! Who doesn't love polls?

I'd LIKE and +1 that if I could! :)

And I also wanted to suggest a series about how to create pong. Say, 24 episodes for 2012, and then we'll see where we get to. I most likely end up in hell for this.

@Konrad - A series on how to create pong? I did it in an hour, remember? So each episode would be roughly 3.33 (repeating, of course) minutes.

I'm all for the streaming suggestions. Streaming interviews, video Q&A and live tutorials are a blast. We just need more participation.

Well I for one would love all the ideas presented. I also think you could do random community brainstorming on various subjects to help us and you example would be:

1. Creative new ways to advertise games (including the engine)
2. New ideas for the engine and paths to go down
3. website ideas
4. more ideas for the show
5. relevant tutorial ideas for the community
6. community action course to help improve torque and the games within\

and much much more. course these could just be a small portion of the show. Think of it like how at the end of mythbusters they ask for various ideas on particular subjects and act on some of those ideas.

So I looked around GG and could not find when "power hour" is. I have never heard of it until now. Is there a link somewhere?

EDIT: changed to Pacific time. I am still used to everything being in EST.

Mich: Sorry, that was a joke. But in all seriousness, creating a BIG game from the first design docs to publishing in a perhaps weekly series would be huge! Something like what you did with Pong, but showing all aspects of making a more robust game.

I like Luis' idea a lot. My company has be modifying Torque for a while now, and we looked to eventually collaborate with Garage Games to release our MMO engine, and it would be extremely helpful to have an idea as to what is planned for future releases to help with our workplace forecast. We've done a enormous amount of source editing, but great features are always being added to Torque. It would be really nice not to focus our efforts on plan features, when we could direct work efforts elsewhere.

Either way, I'm beyond excited!
