GarageGames: Make A Game in iT2D with Michael Perry - LIVE!

by David Montgomery-Blake · 06/09/2011 (10:36 am) · 52 comments

UPDATE: Good news everyone! We are going to have an encore presentation of the stream this Friday at 3:00pm. This gives everyone who missed it a chance to watch it live.

Tune in on 6-17-2011 at 3:00pm (PST) 23:00/11pm (GMT) to watch.

Do you have a dream to make games for the AppStore? Have you wanted a GarageGames developer working side-by-side with you on a real, live game project? Now you can! Michael Perry is offering up his considerable skills to take you through creating a game using iTorque 2D...all in REAL TIME! That's right. You can be online with Mich as he takes you step-by-step through the development and deployment process of creating a simple game in iTorque 2D.

What does this mean? Well, you can sit in on Mich's live UStream demonstration, ask questions, get pointers, and get a feel for the development of a simple game with Artificial Intelligence (AI), touch control, and scoring. The format will be a simple instructional approach to developing a basic, yet complete game with iTorque 2D and deploying to the device and simulator. After the introductory segment, Michael will open the floor for questions from those watching the broadcast.

Wait. Questions, you say? What can you ask him? Ask him questions about his process. Have him go over steps you did not understand. Let him help you with the development process from start to finish with iTorque 2D. You can even offer an impromptu challenge, like changing the game graphics or adding additional functionality.

Requirements:
Interest in making iPhone Games
An internet browser with Flash installed so that you can login to the UStream channel (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/garage-games-live-chat).

To participate in the discussion, you will either need to create a UStream account or use our IRC channel at MaxGaming.

Server: irc.maxgaming.net
Channel: #GarageGames

Chris Tauscher will be monitoring the UStream stream to assist Mich in queuing up questions so that they can be answered in an efficient manner.

We'll see you there on Friday, June 10th at 3pm, Pacific time.

Will this be recorded for people who are unable to attend live?

Yes, we will be recording it. You will be able to watch it later. We understand that it can be extremely difficult for people in timezones all over the world to make it to any specific time.

Btw, since GG fellas systematically denies us the courtesy of announcing the scheduled meetings in GMT/UTC, here it is, for all people in the world, who doesn't live in Las Vegas:

Meeting will be 22:00 hs GMT.

That's approximately 8:36 Las Vegas sidereal time.

Really? I took it from The World Clock.

If thats not accurate, then the bigger the reason to expect this data from GarageGames.

Sounds like a great way to evaluate iT2D! I've been having it in my cart for over a month now. :)

This sounds like a great idea! I'm looking forward to watching the recorded version. Best of luck! If it turns out well will there be future videos?

We're definitely hoping that there will be!

That's the plan. If we have a good turn out for the live event and/or a lot of positive feedback on the recorded video, we can plan out future ones.

The really cool part is that the live tutorials will not always be about iTorque 2D. Furthermore, I will not always be the person running it. Possible scenarios:

- A T3D engineer covers C++ aspects of the engine

- One of our artists create new models and show how to import, apply post FX, animate, etc

- One of our designers can walk through creating a new environment

There is a lot of potential, but like everything we do, you will be the ones that make it successful.

This is awesome. :-)
I don't use iTorque (or any 2D) but walking people thru the process no matter which engine is a great idea.

Argh! Ach! Daggmit! ...

Have fun, looking forward to the recorded version and the chance to sit in on future vids. :-) [all the different scenarios look useful, very VERY useful]

"Challenge Accepted" -- love it...

This sounds cool, just what I need right now. Do you have some particular C++ classes you will focusing on, I might take a look before hand.

The challenge is going to be catering to the varied levels of audience, I am guessing this will be aimed users who are reasonably new to iTorque2D but have been through the tutorials and can make fish swim around!

I wonder if the next tutorials could build more features as requested by your audience after playing the game.

What about deploying the app to the app store, I have not been through that process yet. Are there particular things to consider to get approvals? All that good stuff would be appreciated.

In New Zealand it will be a lovely social 10am Saturday morning so hopefully listen in. Great idea, hope it goes well. Course the UK guys will all be drunk(coming from the UK, I would know).

@Nigel - Tomorrow will be focused just on the editors and TorqueScript. As I stated in my previous post, future events can cover any topic for any of our engines. Someone can simply walk through C++ code, explaining how a module works or create a whole new one.

The streams do not even have to be about code, so covering app store submission is doable (once we have something to submit). If tomorrow goes well, opening up a thread for suggestions makes sense.

Really great initiative, I'll watch it even though I don't own a licence for the product, you can always learn from anything. I'm looking forward to seeing something similar for T3D.

I'm hoping it is a great success! Sounds like a great way to learn the engines! If you are making new ways are you going to ask the community what they would like covered? I might use the results in my resources for Making Indie Games. :)

Best of luck!
