Entries from 7/23 - 9/3
Hey there everyone and apologies for letting this feature slack off the past month. I'm going to assume, given the fact that after two weeks AWOL I hadn't received a barrage of "where the hell are you??" emails and messages that you all were just being very understanding of the fact that sometimes I get a bit extra busy given that GDNet is by far not the only thing I work on these days. So, thanks for giving me a little vacation time ;) I decided to take the time to catch up on ALL the journal entries that were posted in my absence. I've left out the Pick of the Week for this entry but have bolded some interesting entries below.
I'm also going to remind everyone to reference their journal entries as much as possible when they make new posts about previously-talked-about subjects. Yes, when someone views your journal's main page they see a lot of entries, but when I link to an entry or even when someone is taken to an entry from a search result (need I remind you all how much Google indexes this site??) they only see that single entry. If you'd like people to read more about your project or anything that you reference in your post, don't expect them to take the time to hunt it down themselves. Link everything you can, it'll make the difference when a mildly-interested person becomes hooked when they read more about what you're doing.
Welcome new Journal Land citizens dx elliot and Richard Geslot!
Welcome back, a_insomniac and jjd!
Project Updates
* Yeah - While it's now too late to help Aiursrage vote his games to a winning spot in the IndiePub contest, you can still check out the versions he has online and give him some feedback. You can also cross your fingers for him since the winner of the audience voting will be announced on the 15th
* Tales of Ozak - Ozak swings by briefly to inform everyone about the website for Socky, his "java based Socket Server, scriptable through the Rhino scripting host."
* Journal of Lethargic Programmers - Another amazing orbit to surface to orbit terrain engine demo video from Outerra that rivals the one shown off by Ysaneya's Infinity engine. Wow
* Tachyon Wars - after a couple of months away from Journal Land, johny5 retuens with some cool gameplay footage of his project Tachyon Wars
* Promit's Ventspace - Promit's got some new video up on the BioReplicant crowd physics model he's part of a team on, showing some character models reacting to getting knocked down and pushed around via physics only - no animations
* Once a Bird - Congrats to Demosthenes and his team for getting their latest project, Avatar Man, out the door and onto the XBox marketplace!
* Digitanks Development Journal - Check out the latest demo for Digitanks and if you're at PAX this weekend be sure to be on the lookout for BSVino showing off the game!
* Chronicles of the Hieroglyph - Jason Z has updated his codeplex repository for the Hieroglyph 3 engine with the latest multithreaded version
* Under a ShadowyTree - Black Knight has made a Facebook game just for fun and to experiment with the platform
Gamedev Stuffs
* The Code Zone Bargain Basement Blog - johnhattan imparts some wisdom regarding working with Flash on mobile platforms. His first bit of advice centers around dealing with full screen flash games on Android.
* The Code Zone Bargain Basement Blog - John also shares a short code snippet in AS3 (or javascript) that calculates the point on a line closest to a given point
* Journal of dbaumgart - dbaumgart talks about the use of color in pixel art
* The Bag of Holding - ApochPiQ is sick and tired, and tired and sick, of all the mythos surrounding C++ and its wide-spread use in the industry despite the many reasonable alternative languages out there - especially for beginners. So he sits down (with a few drinks in hand, he notes) to educate everyone once and for all on the "virtues" of C++. Expect strong opinions. Let the argument begin (again)!
* jpetrie's journal - jpetrie takes a look at the companion website to an upcoming game patterns book being written by Robert Nystrom (lead engineer, EA Tiburon)
* jpetrie's journal - if you work on multiple projects and have to deal with multiple coding styles, jpetrie looks into using external code reformatters to streamlining the process
* /* Why you crying? */ - JTippetts ponders the use of a tile technique he calls "splatting" to overcome the visual repetition that lets people know you're using tiles. Basically, instead of square tiles you're using irregular "splats" you mash onto the screen so they overlap and create a unique pattern. Of course, the overlap itself can be a potential problem since you're overdrawing a lot of textures, but he addresses that point as well.
Other Stuffs
* Any Colour You Like - gadgets and gizmos!! benryves continues to blog about his various electronics projects with a Z80. If pictures of naked circuit boards turns you on then this is the journal for you.
* jpetrie's journal - jpetrie reviews a self-hosted RSS reader called Fever, that uses a novel technique for bringing important feed items to your attention based upon what you read
* evolutional.co.uk - If you're into Flash Fiction, evolutional has debuted his first piece, titled "Lyra"
Special notes: Good luck to phantom over at his new gig with Codemasters and best of luck as well to zer0wolf after he was recently let go.
Thanks for stopping by, , Matt328, lilljohan, Programmer16, InfectiousGames, Evil Steve, sprite_hound, matt_j, Aardvajk, yckx
