Blender 3D...The Fruity Loops of 3D Movies and Animation

by Ebonixs · 08/22/2010 (12:49 am) · 10 comments

2000 AD, the year I first laid eyes on Fruity Loops 2.0. Since then I've seen it grow and become somewhat the choice for music production next to propellerhead's reason, and Cubase. Then came Garage Games... Now I know that Garagegames' TGE, and TGB has nothing to do with music, but the ability to tap into the creativity of game design.

Since my membership i've been struggling to find out how this inexpense game development kit can help me develope not just a game, but a demo of a concept "I believe would be a hit." This way of thinking seems to transend everyone in the GG Community...and it's true! So far I've seen noobs design, and built something from nothing and posted it online. My response? "Man! I would like to do that... Dude that's cool... Yo! that's crazy! You did that with Torque Constructor?" Everyday I thought to myself, what am I missing? what am I doing wrong, and what can I do to change it?

Today, I've dedicated myself to COMPLETELY learn something and that something is Blender 3D. I've tried Houdini HD, I really like it but the support sucks! On this website and theirs, tutorials comes with a price and honestly, if you don't hae the understanding of the 3D application you'll be hunting for days. Well, I did... Why not 3ds Max? It cost too much! One purchase of that program is my enter pay check gone to expense for me and my family every month. So blender definately fits my budget...

At this point... I'm dedicating myself to learn Blender and post results here on this blog. This includes completed and incomplete project, issues, versions, etc... What ever I experience on this road of startum. Feel free to comment me... and thanks for reading this blog.

Yeah, sounds like a good choice to me, especially with the newly improved 2.5, I think blender would be in my workflow with 3d stuff too for sure.

Blender is to 3DSMAX what Fruity Loops is to Ableton.

Blender 2.5 is much easier then any of the past versions. I use cheetah 3D and Blender. Here are the websites I use most.

BlenderNation - News and Updates
Blenderswap - Shares content that people make and you can download for free
BlenderCookie - Tutorials etc
YafaRay - Realistic renders for free

Thanks for the support guys... Blender has this amazing History. The one that stands out the most is how it became an open source 3D app. The community is strong.
@ Christopher: Thanks for the links... I can tell you've had some history with blender. If youu have any samples to show off, please do!

Hi sid... Sorry for the late response. Thanks! I'll take a look.

Also for you guys that have an iPhone/iPod Touch there is a resoure on the apple store call "Learn 2.5 Blender" Basically, it's video tutorials from beginner to intermediate. So if you have $1.99 to spend. Try it out!

Note: I'm still downloading it, but because it is $1.99 if figure that it would be good to share. If you think it sucks, take it to apple tunes, or the developer. This blog is for learning not complaining... Thanks! :)

@Ebonixs - Now that you've had a week with it, any feedback on the "Learn 2.5 Blender" app? Not that I can't afford to waste $1.99 - just haven't had time to check it out - but $2 is $2...

@ Jeff, sorry for the lack of response...SERIOUSLY! But the app is a good tool if you are completely new to Blender. It starts from was to view windows in blender to some advance lessons. If you are seasoned, know your way around blender, know the hot keys, can model an object or character in a day. This will be a wate of $2. This is for someone you is still leaarning ways to extrude, ways to navigate using the mouse, basically understanding the application. For a new beginner, if you purchase this app and use it as a guide. You will still be an beginner, but you will be closer to intermediate knowing how to handle the application effectly. In summary? It is a visual cheat sheet.
