Tower Defense Like Never Before - Monoliths of Terravia

by Dwayne DeSylvia · 08/21/2010 (5:49 am) · 8 comments

Monoliths of Terravia is a game in the Desktop Tower Defense (DTD) genre featuring an engaging storyline, strategic campaign planning, RPG elements, an offensive play capability, and complete freedom of movement within a 3D world. Built on the powerful and versatile Torque3D engine, Monoliths of Terravia will provide both a large single-player campaign and a multiplayer mode.

Yup you read that right. A true head-to-head hybrid of a DTD game.

The current state of the game is probably best described as "late alpha". We have the majority of the engine components developed, the majority of the art for the basic gameplay in and three full levels to play either in the standard "wave after wave" DTD mode or a new "vsBoss" mode that gives you both defensive AND offensive capabilities. On top of that, multiplayer is enabled in the build. This means you can play against each other along with having "observers" in the game to watch.

Here's a trailer we made for GDC back in March. The game has matured quite a bit since then and we are working on a new trailer:

A little more about the game:

  1. Terravia resides in the world of Ossura (that means more to come)
  2. There are 3 different factions in the game which we call "Disciplines". They are Earth, Fire and Water.
  3. There are 4 different types of units called Grevits in the game ("Grevit" is a name from the lore which is the same as "creep" in DTD games)
  4. There are also 4 different types of Monoliths (towers in a typical DTD game) in which to defend yourself against oncoming Grevits
  5. Your character has over 30 research attributes in *each* of the 3 Disciplines plus a Global research tree which is Discipline agnostic. These research items increase the power of your Monoliths as well as your Grevits in every battle you play.
  6. You can completely customize your character in the spirit of the old strategy game "Master of Magic" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Magic) by reading a specific number of books in each Discipline in order to give you more advantages in that Discipline. The more books you read in a single Discipline, the more research items for that Discipline are available. But be warned, in the beginning you have a limited number of books to distribute and if you make yourself a master in only one Discipline you are making yourself weak against that Discipline's disadvantaged faction.

We've entered the indiePub Games contest. Check out the following link which also contains links to gameplay documentation:

Looks interesting though with the "away from simple" it might be too complex for the average TD fans.
None the less, I'm interested to give this a go, as I'm no "average td fan" but a td addict :)

Thanks for the feedback and looking forward to hearing about your game play experience. I realize that when I mentioned the indiePubs contest entry page, I didn't mention that it also contains a link to download and try out the game.

Your comment "away from simple" is something we are certainly aware of and keeping a close eye on. A lot of work is going into the UI right now. Thanks!

I had the pleasure of meeting the gamecollider team at GDC 2010. They were special guests in our booth and provided an awesome live demo of Monoliths of Terravia. I am still quite impressed with the game and its mechanics, as well as their ability to utilize and extend Torque.

@Dwayne - Thanks for posting the update and preview. Keep us updated as you reach major milestones and go for a release =)

Looks great! Not the standard iPhone TD game.
