Torque 3D Environment Pack, Desert Climate

by Jacob Dankovchik · 03/28/2010 (11:52 am) · 6 comments

For those who haven't heard of my work with this environment pack, please take a look at my former blogs. I feel very highly confident that this art pack will prove VERY helpful to many out there who do not have the time/required skills to produce a large amount of high quality textures, nor to slowly figure out the terrain tricks for themselves.

First and foremost I'd like to apologize for the delay in this evnrionment getting released. After a VERY large amount of issues at school (it would appear my concept of artistic experimentation is quite different from the administration's) quickly followed up by finals week, I've been a touch busy. With that out of the way though, it's back to work!

This scene here is the Desert environment. I realize that this one also doesn't really look too exciting but in all honesty, it's a desert... Doesn't get all that exciting to begin with. I do however plan to make both localized and global sand-storm effects, but to keep this pack from being in development for too much longer I'll add those in post-release. Basically this, along with the badlands, isn't so much of a show-piece but a practical application.

The particular desert I've posted here is a rough and rocky one with a small oasis. I would love to have filled the oasis with vegetation but alas, I've no plant meshes to work with and I don't want to add things to the scene that you, the buyer, won't have to work with. The L3DT climate file for this scene also is able to produce the rolling dunes for the cliche desert many of us are familiar with. I'd like to make a few adjustments still but for the most part it works very well. This will be part of the "unfeatured features" video I'll make after all of these environments.

First I'll post a few very high resolution screenshots to just show the textures themselves. Below this is a video that shows a short simple fly-around looking at the textures and showing the relation of the texture pattern to environmental water. In the walk-through I make multiple pauses to look at the textures around me, showing the relation of them to the player. Keep in mind, the textures can very easily be scaled bigger or smaller, that is all a matter of personal preference. What is shown here is scaling I personally like, but you can adjust it to anything you like.

Been following your blogs and absolutely love what I see and I've checked out your webpage. Just one question when will you be putting them up for purchase? :)

Well, hopefully I'll have it ready within a week. I've got some time off to work which is great because I'll need it. The last climate, the Tropical climate, is a bit rough. I've already put a ton of work into it and am still quite far from what I want to have happen, there's just so many different materials at play. I have a little side thing I'm playing with which I'm going to post a little later on, after that I'll be getting to work on the tropical and I may actually be able to get it as early as tomorrow or wednesday.

And thanks for reminding me, I need to get in gear and work on the site... hahah.

Looks nice! Is T3D using parallax mapping or am I seeing things there?
