Sunday SoW Update 1

by Gareth Fouche · 01/18/2010 (6:26 am) · 4 comments

As promised, I'm updating every week on whatever progress I've made, regardless of how "finished" it is, no matter how small. A way to galvanize myself into consistent action, and perhaps interesting to anyone who wants to follow SoW's progress.

This week, still on making models. I'm working on a "Warehouse District Set", a number of modular models I can use to construct the warehouse district in the starting city, Korrinport. It isn’t complete yet, but it’s coming along nicely. The first model in a set always takes the longest I find, after that I can use the “decorations” from the first on the following pieces, speeding up further modelling.

I've finished a warehouse and a grain silo, you can see some of the modular pieces there are still unfinished, the lever and stairs and door. Those are some of those modular pieces I mentioned. There are some more screenshots on my dev blog here.

Great work and yay for weekly updates! Keep it coming!

Minor crit for the silo model: Taking the stairs as an indicator on the player model scale, I think that the wood grain on the silo is a bit large. Also, it's a little hard to tell the material that the bands around the silo are made of. Maybe get some more black and reddish rust tones in there to make them appear more metal-ish.

Looking forward to see this in a game level.

Your work is looking really good, but something has been bugging me about your warehouse and it finally occurred to me what i was, you technically have an unstable structure, which (at least to the engineer in me) makes it unbelievable, so take it as you may but i would suggest adding additional support timbers to the design as shown in the below markup i did quickly, which would in my opinion would make it a bit more believable..
