www.xenocell.com/dev/dtsview102.jpgI've managed to spend some time on DTSViewer to address a few nags and add new features that have been requested over the past week. The new features are:

  • Nodes - you can now view nodes on your shape and turn displaying them on and off
  • UI love - you can now show and hide the mesh and skin lists so it is more convenient to create small size shots of your models
  • Open dialog - if you just start the program by itself (without a parameter and not by double-clicking a .dts file), it will now present you with an open file dialog instead of silently shutting down

Existing users should just launch Updater.exe in their install directory or download the new version from their bitgap.com account.

What is it again?

If you've missed the release announcement, here is what you should know about DTSView:

DTSViewer is a tool that lets artists preview their models in Torque 3D tech. It also enables the making of transparent screenshots of 3D models in both orthogonal (isometric) and perspective camera views. It's features are the following:

  • Up-to-date - you can choose to check for updates automatically - download and install any new versions of the tool
  • Lightweight - the installer is a slim 2.6 Megs download
  • Automatic - double-click a DTS file to view it right away!
  • Intelligent - saves your settings on every object that you ever view while you work
  • Open anywhere - no path registration needed, simply click the file, the tool will find materials and skins for you automatically
  • To close, just click outside the viewer
  • Rotate, pan, zoom and automatically fit the object in the view
  • Show and hide mesh groups and nodes on your shape
  • Reskin with a single click - the program scans images that are valid skins for the model
  • 2D or 3D - choose between orthogonal (also known as isometric) and perspective camera views
  • Take a screenshot of your object with 5 different backgrounds or a transparent background
  • Ideal for making character portraits, isometric tile sets or icons for your game from your 3D objects
  • Resize the view pane to resize your screenshot
  • Convert collada .dae files to .dts (requires that you make .dae files open with this program first)
  • Test materials on any object - compatible with Torque 3D and TGEA materials
  • Works with TGE - it creates materials on the fly if they are missing
  • Supports all material features that Torque 3D supports

Where to get DTSViewer?

You can get it in our online store from $19.95 (Indie license).

I hope you'll like the new features! Please let me know in this thread what you'd like to see in the next update, and I'll do my best to make it happen.

So does it make this like a much improved version of Showtool? Does it show animations as well?

@Michael: If you read the description you would see what its aim is for and what features it provides.

But yes it does do animations ... dependant on the model and not the way ShowTool does and it is probably not really aimed at being a ShowToolPro replacement ... although it suits my purposes just fine and does exactly what I normally use ShowToolPro for.

Thanks guys for the nice words, I'm glad it's turning out to be useful.

@eb: I'll check on that and make sure it's fixed in the next update. Thanks for letting me know.

@Michael: As NovoGeek said, it's not ShowTool, but depending on what you used ShowTool for, it could be a great alternative to ShowTool. It does not do animations, but if there is an animation sequence embedded into the model at pos 0, it will play that - this is just so you can check static action or root animations, nothing more.
