Introducing DTSViewer from Bitgap Games

This blog is meant to introduce a new tool for artists, DTSViewer. But before I do just that, I want to say thanks to Derek Bronson and Brett Seyler at GarageGames. Without their help and support it wouldn't have happened. I am also happy that GG's found me worthy to join their Associate program, it's been very exciting. Seeing Torque 3D develop a tremendous amount each day through the beta and afterwards was a thrilling experience. There are a few other things I wanted to mention before I get to DTSViewer. The thing I'm the most excited about right now is that we have reworked Bitgap Games' website and added lots of features. This is great news for our existing Cliff Construction Kit licensees, since now they are able to access their products without having to bug me. Good news for everyone I guess! :) The Torque 3D version of the Cliff Construction Kit will be announced in about a week, so stay tuned!
There have been other exciting things at Bitgap. Recently we were interviewed by Maxim Bardin from Linux Gaming News about our game, Xenocell. He's asked some really cool questions. If you're interested in the game and want to learn more about it, be sure to check it out, though it's pretty lengthy!
What is DTSViewer?
DTSViewer is a tool that lets artist preview their models in Torque 3D tech. It also enables the making of transparent screenshots of 3D models in both orthogonal (isometric) and perspective camera views. It's features are the following:- Up-to-date - you can choose to check for updates automatically - download and install any new versions of the tool
- Lightweight - the installer is a slim 2.6 Megs download
- Automatic - double-click a DTS file to view it right away!
- Intelligent - saves your settings on every object that you ever view while you work
- Open anywhere - no path registration needed, simply click the file, the tool will find materials and skins for you automatically
- To close, just click outside the viewer
- Rotate, pan, zoom and automatically fit the object in the view
- Show and hide mesh groups on your shape
- Reskin with a single click - the program scans images that are valid skins for the model
- 2D or 3D - choose between orthogonal (also known as isometric) and perspective camera views
- Take a screenshot of your object with 5 different backgrounds or a transparent background
- Ideal for making character portraits, isometric tile sets or icons for your game from your 3D objects
- Resize the view pane to resize your screenshot
- Convert collada .dae files to .dts (requires that you make .dae files open with this program first)
- Test materials on any object - compatible with Torque 3D and TGEA materials
- Works with TGE - it creates materials on the fly if they are missing
- Supports all material features that Torque 3D supports
It is not a modeling application. It does not show nodes or play animations, but that was not our intent. Originally, we created it to help us make icons from our 3D objects and create portraits for our Yack pack integration. Later we wanted more features, and eventually it evolved into this product.Where to get DTSViewer?
You can get it in our online store from $19.95 (Indie license).

Thanks for reading through.

@Ronny: There will be a Mac version, but it depends on other factors, so I can't say an ETA yet.

looks good!, suggestion: T3D support web publishing, why not make a IE plugin for an artist or content packs creators can show your models?...

@Javier: Thank you. Web publishing is beyond the initial scope of this tool - but that might change in a future update.

Great job Konrad! That would have sure been handy when I was making shots for the product documentation on the Enchanted Forest pack.

Sounds cool. Would still love to have the animations and the capability to use the mesh hiding system :-).

@Andrew: Thanks! Hope you'll like it!
@Joshua: Well, it plays the embedded root animation if there's one. DTSViewer does support mesh hiding - so does Torque 3D - out of the box. DTSViewer also remembers which meshes were hidden the last time for each model you open. Great to use with objects that work with mesh hiding, such as BrokeAss Games' Advanced Character Kits. Edit: You probably meant nodes, right?

@Todd: Thank you! Let me know when you create the Evil Forest version! Can't wait to see some Tim Burtonish trees in there! :)@Andrew: Thanks! Hope you'll like it!

@Konrad. Good to hear. We are still looking for a decent solution to use for those who work on models and animations. Right now everyone has T3D so that is not a big deal, but having a low cost tool for previewing or building up the guiobjectviewer we use for our player displays is nice. Torque Show Pro does some of this, but it is outdated and doesn't handle the meshes we use on our core model.

I had planned to make something like this for myself for awhile but have not been able to get to making it just yet. I appreciate you reading my mind. ;)

@EB: Hehe, this is not the first time, is it? (Edit: Meaning.. I've been assumed to be my own clone and an avid mind-reader before - that's inspiring and flattering to me, really, so thanks.) :) Thanks for picking it up, hope you will like it.

1) If I buy a license now (for the TGEA version) will I get the T3D version as well, or will T3D be released as a separate product?
2) I couldn't see in your description page whether or not I can create custom cliffs shapes / textures. Are they just DTS, or did you have to create some type of custom shape?

Looks good Konrad. I'm very interested in your T3D port of the Cliff kit.1) If I buy a license now (for the TGEA version) will I get the T3D version as well, or will T3D be released as a separate product?

Before you purchase the Kit, please send me an email. I've been wanting to get in touch with you, but failed so far. You can find my address on the Bitgap.Com website. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Tim. The Torque 3D version will be a part of the whole product, it is a free upgrade for existing licensees. If you buy the CCK now, the Torque 3D version will appear under your Bitgap.Com account when it comes out. You can also create your own custom shapes. The manual (that is now public) has a separate section about how you can add your own shapes and / or materials. The cliffs are just .dts shapes. They are instances of a TSStatic derivative class. Before you purchase the Kit, please send me an email. I've been wanting to get in touch with you, but failed so far. You can find my address on the Bitgap.Com website. Thanks in advance.
