Verve - For Fly Throughs

by Phillip O'Shea · 10/05/2009 (9:11 pm) · 9 comments

Torque 3D 1.0 dropped last week and with it came a particularly beautiful demo level named "Burg". The pureLight team have done an outstanding job with this level showing off just how awesome T3D can look even with its "basic" lighting system.

Brett posted a quick fly-through of the level and it was pretty apparent that the camera was controlled by a person. There isn't anything wrong with that, its just that it can be difficult to control the speed or the flow of the presentation. It can also detract from the quality of the subject matter and as indie developers we cannot afford to do this.

I've spoken a fair bit about the path system in Verve, and I will probably continue to do so. Predefined or static paths are a very important aspect of a cinematic or machinima sequence. I spent a few hours using Verve to create my own fly-through demo of the Burg level:

Note: Check out the HD version on Youtube.

My goal here is to make Verve as easily accessible to every Torque 3D developer as possible. Camera work is such a fundamental aspect which deserves a lot of attention. You can expect a number of tutorials and demonstrations covering how to do all of this with Verve.

This is Post #3.

Verve seems flipping awesome to me Phillip. When I first heard of it I was only intrigued -- "oh a pathed camera and cut-scene editor... sounds cool" -- but after seeing more and catching little hints & teases here and there it became something in my mind necessary and definitely something to keep an eye on.

I think you've done some fantastic work in an area that's only ever seen a small bit of work before. Something I knew could be done by a talented person... and then you go and exceed anything I ever expected of it! Awesome, simply awesome :D

@Steven: There will probably be another release before 1.0. Just to make sure everything is running ok with 1.0. I'll have a few tutorials ready for that release as well.

@Frank: I'll ask GG if they can get it up on their account. If not, I'll upload it myself shortly. I'll post back when it happens.

@Michael: Thanks mate! There is still a bit of work to get done before 1.0, but its coming along nicely. I'd like to ramp up the marketing campaign a notch to show everyone just what Verve is capable of.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I had thought they used your tool. Verve looks like an excellent cinematics editor, can't wait to try it.

This tool is looking awesome! I've recorded quite a few shots of TGEA & Torque 3D for tutorial videos where this tool would have certainly come in handy.
