Finally A Few Videos - Old School CNMI, TGEA & T3D Stuff

by Alan James · 08/18/2009 (9:34 am) · 13 comments

Hey Everyone!

As I noted in the preview, because of a great gift from some great guys (and gals), I've updated from a BFG 7300 GTS 256MB to a GeForce 260 GTX 896MB. Woo hoo! So I've finally been able to make a few video captures of some things. I still haven't learned how to setup a cam path and capture that way (and probably don't have the patience to do so). So some of this stuff is pretty...well...not especially professional in that sense. It's just pretty much raw captures.

Here's the other thing. Youtube seriously degrades video. Now I know I'm stating the obvious, but I hadn't realized how much until I tried to get something that looked decent up. I've gone ahead and used them here, since some folks just don't have the bandwidth to handle big downloads, but if you do, please grab the links down below the YouTube stuff...they're between 25 and 105 MB each, but they're substantially better.

So first up is some "Old School" Code Name: Monster Island Stuff, not a whole lot but kinda fun:

Next is a few clips from the TGE version of the "Sticks & Twigs" Pack:

These are a few from the upcoming update to the "Sticks & Twigs" Pack for T3D:

This is the SciFi Construction Kit for TGEA (Still EA...I've resoved the issues for T3D, but TGEA has me still stumped:

Here is the SciFi Construction Kit in T3D:

And here is the "Downtown District" (With one or two additions) in T3D for Testing Purposes:

And finally here is the "Goldmine" Pack, haven't worked on it in a while...

So that's all the seriously funky YouTube Stuff. Below are a few screens and links to the corresponding Videos that are quite a bit better quality (and not the exact same stuff). I'd really recommend you check them out if you've got the bandwidth and the spare time!

Thanks again everyone! Back to Work!

If you've made it this far, hope you liked them. You can see some of this stuff here in the GG store and I've got a few things on www.monsterpacks.com that aren't in the videos here, including some nice Audio Packs by Will Zettler. Anyway, I'm off to bed...soon...

Congrats on your new gfx card! Amazing stuff, Alan! Great progress with the Torque3D content!

I remember you had a war trench pack project (or something along that idea, can't remember the name). Is that still being made, or have you dumped the project?

Thanks for the videos! I'm downloading the hires ones, it just takes a bit more time. :)

Youtube HD video is actually pretty good... you just have to get your original encoding right for good results.

For example this video i did is pretty high quality. I just followed this guide.

Still Vimeo video is slightly better with the same source video, but not enough to make it worth dealing with their weird limits on content.

Hey thanks guys!

@Konrad K.,
It was kind of a WWIIish thing, with guard towers, trenches, etc. back burnered, but not forgotten! I've got a stove that must have about a dozen burners on it! The big thing for me kind of at the moment is a effort to transition from BSP to Mesh modeling, and the really big sticking point on that is UV mapping...as I've said before, it's a very, very evil thing...

@Tom S.
Thanks for the link! I'm going to see how I do capturing with Fraps at the resolution that they recommend. I'm seeing about a 10-15 fps hit with Fraps running now (at half that resolution) so I'm not sure how successful I'll be. The GPU is definitely a screamer, but it's in a 1.0 slot and being pushed with a 3.2HT and 2GB of straight DDR...I'll update the post if I have any luck!

@Alan
In-game, Fraps seems to run slow when recording, but tends to come out okay (locking to 25fps) at 1280x720 for HD. This spam had terrible in-game lag when recorded for HD, but looks okay. And I've got a pretty crappy GPU.
I compress using VirtualDub (free!), and the (also free!) FFDshow codec using "MPEG4, DivX FourCC, at 4000 bitrate", if I've got a really stupidly large file size.
and no, I don't know what any of that means ... but it seems to work well

Also: nice stuff

Would be nice to see some low res you tube vids of some of these, for those of us in the 3rd world who can't afford 50-100mb for a few minutes of video :(

@Steve
I'll give that a try and see what I come up with. Thanks for the info!

@Hans
The S&T Skeleton Canyon is "Sticks & Twigs"...it will be part of the update for that Pack for T3D! Here's another screen of another updated mission for T3D from that pack:

@Andy
Cool deal. Some point down the line the "Downtown District" in line for a re-boot also for T3D, just need to make 36 hour days...=P

@Gareth,
After looking at the info from Tom S., I think most of those will look ok in SD on YouTube (they were captured and encoded almost to the Standard Definiton Specs they list...actually a little different from the first set), so I'll try and get those uploaded after work this afternoon to YouTube and post their links also!

Ok, here are the Higher Definition download videos uploaded to YouTube, they are listed as HD, but that's just because Josh took the file names and used them in the description. I'm still planning on capturing some new true HD stuff, but I got sidetracked making heightmaps this evening:
