In these tough economic times, companies come and go. We recently heard that Blade3D is winding down, meaning a lot of small developers are going to lose their investment in these tools. This is unfortunate since the toolset offered a lot of promise for Xbox 360 and PC game development.

In the midst of this development, we saw other game engine companies are offering a discount on their products to ease the transition. Although we wish we would have thought of this ourselves, we try to avoid the "not-invented-here" syndrome. So in the spirit of getting Blade3D developers back on their feet, we're offering a 50% discount on Torque 3D.

Like Blade3D, Torque 3D offers a robust set of editors so you can start developing games quickly.

Torque 3D will not be Blade3D. However, we do publish to multiple platforms including not only Xbox 360, but also the Wii, iPhone, and the web. We also offer an intuitive COLLADA art pipeline for game artists, a slew of great editors to craft your game, and great rendering and particle effects to create a stunning game. And, of course, Torque owners can take advantage of our best asset, our 150K+ developer community.

Check out what Song Yongjin and others are already creating with Torque 3D in the show-off thread.

If you want to take advantage of the offer, send your Blade3D purchase receipt to support@garagegames.com before October 31st. We will get back to you in 2-3 business days with a coupon code so you can purchase Torque 3D with the discount.

Here's hoping we can help out a few misplaced developers to get back on their feet quickly and making great games!

Hey guys,

First, to alleviate confusion, the special is indeed for a full 50%. We essentially want to give Blade3D users the same offer that we gave all current owners of TGE/TGEA when we first launched the Torque 3D preorder.

Our reasoning? We are trying to build a strong, numerous community of solid game developers. We've talked to many Blade3D developers at conferences, via e-mail, and in person, and they seem like the type of people who fit our community perfectly. We want them with us, and we don't want price to be a barrier to entry, the same way we didn't want price to be a barrier to entry for our current community members, which is why we are offering them an equivalent of the original Torque 3D preorder discount.

In talking to these users, we've discovered that many of these users might have tried Torque back when we won the Frontline award had they not already been so heavily invested in Blade3D's subscription model. They could have even bought TGEA when we announced Torque 3D pricing and then upgraded for Beta 1. We want to extend them the opportunity to make that choice now, especially given that what they've invested into will not be supported from here on out.

Will a few people win the lottery and have bought a subscription to Blade3D last month and get a big discount? Sure. But those aren't the numbers we're seeing. All of the people who have submitted a ticket to date have been using Blade3D for a lengthy period of time. And we are offering this discount for the same period of time that we offered our original discount.

I hope the community doesn't see this generosity as a bad thing. It's more of a retroactive preorder offer to Blade3D users, for the same period of time that we ran the original discount. And new Torque users in our community also means more people to share knowledge and faster bug fixes for us.

I think GG is doing the right thing. It's a great offer. I've been in the position that the Blade3D people find themselves in right now. It's not a nice feeling to have the rug pulled from under your feet. For some teams, it'll be a real big letdown that may pull them apart. Torque 3D is the light they need to keep their spirits up and to keep their creative juices flowing. Great Going GG!! And thankyou for stepping up and helping out another community.
Welcome to all the Blade 3D people. Here, you'll find a lot of information that will help get you back on your feet and developing that awesome game again. :-)

Actually, community members received the $505 offer IF they already had TGEA. So they -At The Least- paid $800 for what Blade users are receiving for $500. I paid a total of $945 for T3D...and these guys get it for $500 ? A little disheartening..but oh well life goes on.

I could care what you charge as it is your business...charge what you want to charge. ...just don't say that it is something that it clearly is not:

An equivalent would be $800 not $500. Logic is logic, nothing more. .:Shrugs:. (Let me add that I hope that loads of people join the community...I am all for the community growing HUGE. I mean..I can disagree with that quoted statement but still agree with it's sentiment, right ? ;) )

@ The new T3D users/Blade3D users.. welcome and I hope you feel at home even though I had to get metaphysical on this thread. I am sure you'll enjoy this experience. ;)

//Edit, I don't mean to come across poorly Deb. I just don't see that situation as "equal". That's all.

@eb - You and your logic! ;) Yeah I find it kind of funny too. They chose to go with something besides Torque, it failed and now they get to purchase it at a lower cost. We bought it and had to pay an extra $300 - $400. Screw us and our loyalty.

Well what GG is doing is that their counting the balde3d license as an equivalent license to TGE/TGEA. And in that perspective it is even. or if you want to count nicles ... they should have an extra 5$.

Why are you people complaining? This is good news for ALL. The more licenses garage games sells, the more developers garage games can hire, which means BIGGER AND BETTER ENGINE for the indie community.

Not to mention more people making free resources and help in the forums...

I think Garage Games isn't just offering this to the folks that paid $14.95 for one month. That's what it says you have to send in a receipt and the sales office would get back. Probably because they would have to review it. Also, this makes more sense to pull developers away from Unity and over here where the real action is.

You guys do know that complaining like this isn't perhaps the best way to welcome Blade3d users despite your words of welcome. Perhaps a email or something would be better?

The point is the Blade users have had bad fortune and GG have offered them (as others have) a option to turn that bad fortune into a good one, to begrudge them that considering it wasn't pre-planned or something is a little silly.

The deal may in fact turn out better then your previous discount and thus the conclusion / comparison of two may be off a little, but still.

I do know there are a lot of businesses that do far worst (or not at all) when it comes to discounts and awarding community loyalty / purchases and compared to those gg do a pretty good job.

Not true. The $295 you spent for TGEA is a "sunk cost" - it's not recoverable. It helped pay for the development of TGEA, and has no relation to the price of T3D, beyond that they decided to give you a discount. You spent $505 for T3D, nothing more.

Good move, and welcome to the Blade3D users. I hope you all find your experience with the GarageGames community and product line as fulfilling as mine has been.

I'm really glad to see so many of you guys behind this move. I think it's really a good opportunity for us to bring more developer talent into this community. As for the discount relative to the TGEA discount, or the pre-order discount, I think I understand. Nothing we do to welcome Blade3D users to the Torque community will detract from the value we're offering with Torque 3D though, and I think there will be plenty of value to go around. I'd rather see more qualified developers working with the product, sharing their knowledge and expertise back with the community than see them scatter to a variety of other options, or give up game development altogether because of what happened with Blade3D.

I know the Blade3D founders pretty well. They're smart, they made a good product, did innovative things with their license model, and generally contributed in a very positive way to the industry. I'm guessing we probably haven't heard heard the last from Christian or the other talented people from Digini.

@Jaimi - Sunk cost? Man how I hated economics. I understand that it is a sunk cost but it still doesn't make it everyone feel warm inside. Torque3D is shaping up nicely, so I'm happy. I just want some improvements either to the performance of Advanced Lighting or more features in the Basic Lighting.

I know everyone is feeling warm and fuzzy around here, but let's be honest this is about $$$. The last thing GG wants is for Unity to get all of these users. Which is why I assume they gave the same offer. It seems that Unity is run by a very smart bunch of people. I would guess that GG is feeling the heat from them. I would assume that is why Brett was saying GG didn't want to release T3D soon to get money, but to compete in the marketplace. Too bad because I think Unity isn't very good at all (editors being the exception).

I would think the time lost to Developing in an extinct engine, worth more than the difference in price points, EB. To those who have 'lost' something valuable: Time, they deserve a bit of a 'break' to get them back to where they were....

Pound for pound, GarageGames.com does/continues to do more for their customers/clients than any other equally priced engine....and for that, I am very grateful.

Thanks Deborah/Brett/GG/etal!!

OmegaDog is right, Torque is a wonderful project.

@Tau TGE and TGEA use to have great support. GG has pretty much discontinued them, which is why they have not been answering that much. It's more like Unity is following in the trail of Torque. Torque has MANY more features than Unity, and there are not many things that you can do in Unity that you can't in Torque.

I am deleting your flamebait post, Tau. This has nothing to do with 'heat' from anyone, and if you dislike Torque, post it in the forums.. or don't.

We simply thought that it was a good thing to try and help out fellow developers. Not going to let this blog get derailed by negativity. Thanks!

Good move!
The Torque better asset is the community. Anything that favours it, will be a good move.

@Omega-gog: I still see that cigar on your pet's mouth... Im warning you! here in my country, the layers are as specially evil kind of lawyers.

Nice to see GG still cares about developing more than money. Good move in my opinion, hopefully get the money to upgrade to T3D soon. GG has always been about helping the little guy, glad to see even though they have grown in the years they are still lending knowledge and at reasonable prices.

No offense to everyone, but GG is a business and this is about $$ and not giving up more market share to Unity. I don't blame GG for doing this at all. It is very smart actually.
